At the outset, France, Great Britain and Poland, the so called democratic powers, would have a slight numerical advantage over the German Italian axis. The democracies, also, would have more man power behind the fighting lines, though not so many men with military training as the regimented axis powers. The approximate strength: (First figure men under arms and second figure men capable of service.) France, 2,000,000; 4,000,000 (most with some training); Britain, 1,000,000, 6,000,000 (few with any training); Poland, 1,000,000; 1,500,000 (most with training); Germany, 2,000,000, 2,000,000 (Mostly trained) ; Italy, 1,100,000, 5,100,000, (mostly trained). Turkey, Greece and Rumania, inclined to the democracies side, could place 3,000,000 trained men into action. In those countries, as well as Hungary, Jugoslavia and Bulgaria, in the Balkans; in the neutral countries Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland and Luxembourg in the northwest, and Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania bordering Russia, every able bodied man would be a potential fighter in case the aggressors should violate neutral borders.
