Show Senior Health Connection newsletter Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital Center Healing for Life January 2012 The Dreaded Common Cold Happy New Year and welcome to another cold season! Although most colds are not considered serious most adults will likely have two to four colds in the next 12 months. Colds usually occur during the cold- weather months and many people believe that cold weather causes colds. This is a myth. The real reason is simple, when the weather turns cold people spend more time indoors where they have closer, prolonged contact with others who might be sick. The cold virus is usually "caught" by having hand to hand contact with a person who has a cold or by using a shared object such as shopping carts, door knobs, or telephones. Once you touch your mouth, eyes, or nose after such exposure to a cold virus, you can catch a cold. Common colds usually go away in about 7days and you do not need to see a doctor, however if your symptoms seem severe, more flu-like, or symptoms don't improve, you may have a secondary infection and you should seek medical attention. Prevention Tips Colds are difficult to prevent but there are several things you can do to steer clear of the virus that makes you sick. Wash well and often. Washing hands in soap and warm water is the most effective defense. If you can't get to a sink, alcohol-based sanitizer is a good alternative. Routinely clean surfaces and shared objects with disinfectant spray or wipes. Cold viruses can live on surfaces for several days. Limit exposure to others with colds and avoid sharing towels, drinking glasses, or hand towels, especially with those who have colds. Keep your immune system strong by eating well balanced meals, exercising regularly, and getting enough rest. A healthy immune system will help fight off the cold virus and other infections. 31 |
