This collection contains 74 diaries of Dr. Edward Rich and his wife Almira. They begin in 1892 and run through 1965. The bulk of this collection centers on Almira's diaries that run from 1897-1947. During that time she documented her personal life and the medical practice of Edward, the community of Ogden and national events such as the outbreaks of WWI and WWII. The diaries also include newspaper and magazine clippings, memorabilia and pins. |

Show Tuesday, Jan. 31. Ancon. The most delightful place to sleep, rest and see different things. All mdse very cheap. Beautiful dishes, Linen, rugs, and imported articles form all over the world. We spent an hr. or two looking thro Fort Clayton U.S. Exchange. There are five such posts for the convenience of U.S. Army, Navy and the people who are in the U.S. employ. Cloteel has very good help a cook also a laundry maid. There are so many different things to see and we shall be reluctant to go I am sure. This evening we drove to Panama and had a good view of the people and what they do in the evening. They seem a very happy people. All colors. Dr has slept a lot today. Wednesday, Feb. 1. Ancon. Imagine a great stick of bannnas for 15 or 20 cts. and some of the other tropical fruits very delicious 7 cheap but much fruit is shipped in from the States. The trees and foliage are beautiful as it is so different to what we see at home. the flowers brilliant also the leaves of so many shrubs. Cloteel & Thair have purchased some lovly things for their home about 50 percent cheaper than in U.S. This evening we went for a ride to see more of Panama. Recd a letter from Lucile her sons John and Douglas are at the U of U. Am enjoying every minute. Met several of Thairs friends today. Thursday, Feb. 2. Ancon. Enjoyed a nice breakfast. Cloteel and I went shopping at the Army Post Commisary Stores. They have many beautiful things. There was a sale on silk underware and linen I bought me a beautiful silk set of Gown, slip, and panties for 5.50 had been 11.50 and in the states the jawn would cost that, Dr & Thair went fishing and Thair caught a 15 fish with an emmense head a ft & half long. Also a 5 snook. They are good to eat. This evening we all went to Panama and spent the time at Tonneys a Hindo who has wonderful linens. I bought Maren (for Cleone) some wonderful things. The weather is ideal. All happy. Friday, Feb. 3. Ancon. Sent letters to Oertel, Mary, Avon & a card to Ezra. Dr wrote Junior. Time goes very quickly. Their & I rode around town. Visited various stores and government posts. In eveng we all were invited over to Dr & Mrs Brewers for dinner. A nice eveng. Very nice people. They live in a part of the same house as Thair & Cloteel. Lovely cool evening. I write some cards home. The following pages are written by Dr. I hope dots his eyes & crosses his Ts. Edward will keep up diary for trip. |
