Feb. 16 Cristobalites will be treated to their first glimpse of one of the very newest and largest of the trans Atlantic liners when the Holland America liner Nieuw Amsterdam docks Friday at 2 p.m. on her first trip through the Panama Canal and around South America. It will be her third voyage as a cruise ship, two shorter trips having pieceded this one during the current cruise season, both to Rio de Janeiro. Her gross register tonnage is 36,287; her length overall 758 feet her beam 88 feet. She accomodates 1,232 passengers and carries a crew of 650. But it is not for her size that the Nieuw Amsterdam will attract Isthmian residents who are so fortunate as to secure passes to board the new liner, less than a year old and one of the most popular in the trans Atlantic service. The beauty of her appointments; the artistry of her decorations and the modern touch that characterizes everything about the luxury liner will appeal to all who see her, even as these characteristics lured some 560 passengers to book for the expensive cruise.
