This collection contains 74 diaries of Dr. Edward Rich and his wife Almira. They begin in 1892 and run through 1965. The bulk of this collection centers on Almira's diaries that run from 1897-1947. During that time she documented her personal life and the medical practice of Edward, the community of Ogden and national events such as the outbreaks of WWI and WWII. The diaries also include newspaper and magazine clippings, memorabilia and pins. |

Show Tuesday, Feb. 23. Guatemala City. Move up to Palace Hotel more Central and modern. Register at Police Headquarters. Post letters etc. Ride around for 2 hours visit old cathedrals and parks. See about trip to interior for tomorrow. Call on Miss Robles and take her with us for Auto ride. Mira bumps head on car door top in getting in and hurts her quite badly. Visit Air poart and parks. Beautiful Spanish air port. Mira goes to bed early with some headache. Cool up here. Nice city. Receive letters from Junior saying all well at home. Wednesday, March 1. Lake Atitlan. Guatemala. Come up here from Guatemala city via Mixco, Sumpango, Chimaltenango. Very nice trip. Our own Auto. Indian chauffer very good and Spanish conductor Joseph Aparicio very nice fellow. Fine top much dugway. Steep grades narrow road but generally good some dust in passng cars. Lake Atitlan from Insparation Point one of grandest syhts I have ever beheld Wonderful very blue one of bluest in world. Take boat and go across lake to Indian village. Very primitive and quaint. Meet a Mr & Mrs Inbush and Mr & Mrs Kreger from Milwaukee U.S. Stop at Wennan Inn. Thursday, March 2. Chichicastenango. (Mayan Inn) left lake Atitlan at 8 a.m. Steep dugway up from lake 2500 feet winding dugway all the way. Solola a quaint indian village about 10 miles from lake. Steep winding dug way everywhere Interesting, picturesque indian homes all the way. Trails leading off from road to little houses. This is Indian market day here. Very interesting. Worship at church very weird and interesting. Took many pictures. Go on to Quiche and visit Market. Very interesting. Go out to old ruins from Quiche. Very interesting. Buy indian costumes from young Indian and his wife at INN. Retire 11 pm. Tired by interested. Friday, March 3. Antiqua, Guatemala Machen Inn. Visited Solola (Solola) market this a.m. many, many Indians all along road. Costumes pretty and colorful. From our hyh mountain passes through fog in places pretty. Ate lunch at Panceon Martha an Indian place at Tacpan (Tapan) the first Spanish settlement. Come on to Antigua and looked over ruined Cathedrals etc from earthquake of 1773. Terrible destruction. Interesting places. Cold this eveng. Last earthquake here in 1932 not much damage. Ashes & dark lasted 12 hour. |
