Berlin Germans characterize artillery action on western front as sporadic barrage, say two French planes down; nazis assert troops may leave trenches by Christmas if powers desiring peace act immediately on Hitlers peace formula. London British comment foreshadows statement of British French war aims as reply to Hitlers proposals; admiralty says two mine sweepers attacked, no casualties. Moscow Lithuanias hopes for regaining: Wilno, traditional capital, dimmed by Wilno workers objections; Finland next on soviet list in Baltic expansion. Stockholm Finland calls up army reserves; delays reply to Russian bid to Moscow conference. Hyde Park Roosevelt silent on suggestion he propose armistice in Europes war; third foreign submarine reported off Miami, Fla. As the concluding feature, Heber J. Grant, L. D. S. church president, bore his testimony that I know Jesus Christ is the savior of mankind. I have borne this same testimony with all the fervor I possess, he said, for the past 57 years and there is scarcely a stake in which I have not done this. He asked his listeners to beware of their own mistakes and to remember they will not be held accountable for the mistakes of others. He declared he knew of no mistakes which had been made by general authorities of the church in their instructions for the good of the people. PARIS, Oct. 9 For the first time since the war started five weeks ago, an official French communique today gave indications that more or less general operations were underway on the western front. The communique said German patrol activity was very great and said it was taking place all the way from the Moselle river valley on the extreme end of the front to Saarbruecken, where the Saar river bends back from Germany into France. WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 The senate agreed today to vote at noon Tuesday on a motion by Sen. Charles W. Tobey to recommit the neutrality bill for the purpose of separating the title and carry and the arms embargo repeal provisions. WASHINGTON, Oct. 9. The senate agreed late today to vote by two p. m. (E.S.T.) tomorrow on a motion by Senator Tobey (R.-NH) to split the administration neutrality bill into two parts. F.D.R. SIELTN ON PEACE PROPOSAL WASHINGTON, Oct. 9. President Roosevelt returned to the White House today still ignoring semi official German suggestions that he initiate a move for peace in the European war. |
