Show Mayor's Trophy Will Holley Family Most Patriotic Bret Holley Family Most Original Okey Family (the Beatles) Peoples' Choice Carl Slater Family (Tepee) Beginning at 11:00 a.m. was a lunch featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, chips, water and soda pop. The City Council cooked, with Sheriff Deputies helping them to serve. The giant slide and candy cannon were popular with the younger set, as was the new playground equipment. Various games and contests were held. Some of the winners were: Whistling Contest for more mature contestants (after eating a handful of saltine crackers). Winner was Scott VanLeeuwen, who whistled a recognizable , "Comin' Round the Mountain." Water Balloon Toss: Conner Jones and Savannah Brandley. Balloon Pop: Jacelee Meyerhoffer We owe many thanks to the City Council, Becky Burt, Will Holley, and the many volunteers for a great day. At the next City Council Meeting, the celebration was discussed. Councilman Kim Slater thought the ticket line was fairly long. Mr. Morris suggested selling tickets before the lunch, or possibly at the breakfasts. President Dennis Ilium had heard the L.D.S. wards discussing a combined breakfast. President Ilium suggested the possibility of having the food catered. Mr. Slater believed that having the council serve is a good opportunity to interface with residents, even though there is a greater burden on staff for preparations. The Council agreed to keep the food service as it has been. President Ilium mentioned that a few people have asked about using the City Hall Park for the event, but he feels that Marriott Park is better suited with its shade and parking. Councilman Delbert Hodson agreed and thought we should continue to have the event at the Marriott Park. While many residents enjoyed the activities, one resident was irate that they had to wait for the parade to end to be able to leave their subdivision, and voiced his feelings in a letter to The Standard Examiner. A few days later, a Roy resident advised him to arrange to leave earlier, or "just enjoy the parade." In the August 18, 2011, City Council Meeting, Mayor Butler thanked Susan Bodily for preparing the city booth at the County Fair this year. He also thanked Daylynn Brandley for her work with Music in the Park. This program will be discontinued until there is more support for it. Residents of Marriott-Slaterville are fortunate to have several parks available for our use as individuals or for group activities. Playgrounds, ball areas, and boweries are available at the Marriott Park, the Slaterville Park, and the Clifford and Elizabeth Blair Park and municipal gardens, as well as a developing trail and park on 17th Street which will connect us with West Haven's trail for hikers. Tennis lessons are offered each summer. We have the Easter Egg Hunt, the July 4 Freedom Celebration, Trunk-or-Treat, and a Breakfast with Santa Claus each year. The Pioneer Post for September 2011, advised us of many activities at the Senior Center. Each Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. a senior lunch from the Weber-Morgan Nutrition, is served. A donation of $3 for seniors (60 and over) is suggested. Cost for non-seniors is $6. A senior dinner is provided on the third Wednesday each month at 5:00 p.m. These meals provide an opportunity to enjoy nutritious meals and each other's company. Each Thursday a Yoga class for seniors is ably taught by Carolyn Deru, starting at 9:00 a.m. Also on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. is a line dancing class. Both activities help keep people active and provide positive interaction. Anyone is welcome to attend at no charge. 22 |
