Show The Pioneer Post Volume XIII Issue 8 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter August 2011 1570 West 400 North - Phone 627-1919 Mayor's Message This spring was really challenging for our community because of the extensive flooding. Our staff and resources were drained, our residents were burdened, our lives were affected in many ways. During this stressful period, I watched our community unite as neighbors helped neighbors by sandbagging and in many other ways. Now that the flood season is over, there is much to do still. The city has submitted its expenses and a request for river repairs to the county. The county will attempt to obtain funding from FEMA. In the event that funding does not happen, we will need to reassess the issues again. I ask you, your families, and neighborhoods to prepare for possible flooding next spring just in case we are in another flood cycle. Flooding has been common in the history of Marriott-Slaterville. It has happened since before the Pioneers settled this community. Flood cycles in our area can last several years. I encourage everyone to be prepared. I give special appreciation to our wonderful CERT team lead by Dixie and Ken Little. Our CERT team is a model for Weber County, thank you so much. The 400 North reconstruction project is finally wrapping up. A final list of outstanding completion items was submitted to the contractor. The road is working well and I sincerely appreciate the patience of the residents and businesses along the street during construction. It was not an easy project, but I am happy that it has improved your homes and our community. Road projects this summer include: the resurface of 1200 West from 12th Street to the Weber River; and resurface of Pioneer Road between S.R. 126 and 2800 West. With all of the road projects this summer and last year, our road funds are depleted. We took advantage of the low oil prices last year and got our contracts for projects this year submitted early to still get great savings in construction costs. Be patient as we rebuild our road fund reserves so that we can continue to operate this city debt free. This summer the city and Pioneer Special District are completing some park and grounds improvements. Marriott Park got some small bleachers and additional sod. Slaterville Park will benefit from a scout project installing a land drain. Mill Creek got its entryway landscaped, while an expensive moss control system is being planned at Spencer Farms Pond. Scouts also planted trees at the Heritage Park Storm Water Basin, and repainted the all of the tables at City Hall Park. Our wonderful Community Gardener, Pam Hunsaker, and City Forester, Jonathan Saunders, really help bring our parks and gardens to life. I thank our scouts and volunteers for their service to the community. We receive compliments all the time about our community, let's work together to keep it beautiful and safe. Watering 199 All drought restrictions on watering during the day using the pressurized secondary water system operated by the Pioneer Special District are lifted for 2011. The flooding in this city has been severe, so no drought laws will be enforced this year. Feel free to water as needed, but be mindful of waste. We hope that the aquifers may also be recharged while we enjoy an abundance of water. Election Notice Marriott-Slaterville City had three city council seats open this year. Dennis Ilium filed for the east district. Rob Smout filed for the West district. Scott VanLeeuwen filed for the at-large seat. Because all seats are uncontested, the election may be cancelled.
