Show The Pioneer Post Volume XII Issue 11 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter November 2011 Cemetery District There has been a lot of interest expressed by residents about creating a cemetery district. The city council has discussed this topic at its last few meetings and now is considering a resolution on the subject. The resolution will clear the way for a public hearing in January and a petition or election involving the voters in the city to decide whether they want a cemetery. After the initial interest was expressed by our residents, the city council met with the Chair of the Plain City Cemetery District about how that district operates its cemetery. The cemetery district is funded by selling cemetery plots and by a property tax. Residents in the Plain City Cemetery District pay a $12 per year property tax on a home valued at $250,000. However, the Plain City Cemeteiy District already has land and a functioning cemetery. It is anticipated that until the cemetery land is bought, and the first acre is developed, that residents may pay between $35-62 each year for the cemetery district property tax on a home valued at $250,000. It may take 5 years, more or less, to get the cemetery developed. After that, the tax rate may go down similar to the Plain City Cemetery District cost of $12 per year. It is hoped that residents may recoup some of the initial set-up costs by purchasing cemetery plots at a lower price than many commercial cemeteries. A cemetery district is governed by state law. It would be a separate entity from the city. It would have its own Board of Trustees who may be elected or appointed. It is ultimately up to the voters in the city to decide if they want a cemetery district. Feel free to talk to your council member about this topic. Community Awards Each year residents have an opportunity to nominate others in the community for our annual awards. This is your chance to recognize someone for going above and beyond as a neighbor, business, contributor, leader, youth, or volunteer. Nominations are now being accepted by the Mayor for the following: The Good Neighbor Award - nominate a neighbor or business that is an exemplary example.
