Show Marriott-Slaterville Monthly History April 2011 It has come-at least the first serious flooding in our community this year has begun along the Weber River. An above average snowpack in the mountains, as well as a continued wet and cooler than normal spring, has resulted in the predicted flooding problems in several areas of the state. Water has been released from reservoirs on the Ogden and Weber Rivers to allow more of the expected run-off to be stored. The river has exceeded its banks, flooding farm land and threatening homes in several sites in our community. And the anticipated big flow is still to come! City Administrator Bill Morris advised the Council that Mayor Butler was unable to attend the Council Meeting held on April 21, 2011, due to attending a funeral. However, the Mayor wanted to thank Trent Meyerhoffer, Ken Martin and Mr. Morris, for their long hours and hard work dealing with the flooding situation. There was a great response from many people, most of who we didn't know. Weber County responded with needed help. Mr. Martin thanked Lt. Matt Bell for getting sand and bags when needed. When they ran out of sand from the county, Dave Combe volunteered sand from his tree farm on 17*1 Street. The Swanson Foundation donated 2,500 filled sand bags to the city. They are stored in the city's back parking lot if residents would like to pick some up as needed. Pioneer Road was closed Monday night, April 18th for flooding, but was opened up on Tuesday morning. Councilman Kim Slater thanked everyone from the city for their help with the flooding which took place at Riverside Estates on 3650 North, and also at the Tubbs residence on 2750 North. Mr. Slater called the Fire Department to pump the water out of the Tubbs home, where the sewer was backing up into the house. He would like the staff to send a letter of thanks to the Fire Department for their quick response in helping pump out basements. Cary Ralston, in behalf of Riverside Estates, asked the city if they can help repair the river bank, which he understands was built up in 1952. He feels that if there were a 5 ft. bank along the river, it would help alleviate future flooding problems. Mr. Morris advised that FEMA calls them river banks; not levees. The city has an Interlocal Agreement with the county to maintain all the rivers, banks, etc. There is little they can do to stop the banks from slutting off. President Dennis Ilium suggested that staff and residents need to get together to see what can be done to help with the problem. Mr. Slater would like the residents to research what has been done in the past years. Mr. Ralston and Mr. Reed Hill thanked the staff and Bella's Mexican Restaurant for bringing in lunch during the emergency. An Easter Egg Hunt was held on Saturday, April 23, 2011, beginning at 10:00 am. at the Slaterville Park. It was sponsored by the Les Olson Company, Operation Happy Kids, the City, and through Darren Erwin, Larry H. Miller of Riverdale. Fortunately, although cool, it was a much better day than last year's threatening weather. Over 100 children participated, gathering the 1,400 eggs filled with candy. Prizes, including small toys, were given, and a "candy toss" gave out even more candy. The highlight of the event was a visit by the Easter Bunny. We thank Darren and Angela Erwin, and all others, who brought about the fun event. A business license was approved at the City Council Meeting on April 21, 2011, for Walker Auto Services, LLC, 1181 West 12fr> Street, an auto repair business. Susan Bodily gave the Council information on the upcoming Utah Renaissance Festival and Fantasy Faire. Now in its 6th year, it has been held at 3109 West Pioneer Road in previous years. When it became obvious that the flooding on this site precluded it being held there, Mr. Morris assisted in obtaining a site for it this year and it has been moved to 1723 West 1350 South, behind Advanced Paving and Construction in the Riverside Industrial Park. Ms. Bodily thanked the City for their assistance. The National Geographic will be filming the jousting group on May 15, 2011. The resulting footage will be part of a five part special on the resurgence of jousting as a sport in the United States, and will highlight the Knights of Mayhem. As yet, the time and date of the national airing of the special is not known. 160 |
