Show Senior Activities The Senior Health Connection Newsletter, published by Intermountain McKay/Dee Hospital Center, was distributed at the Senior Center for January 2011. Its subject was Preventing Falls in Older Adults. It also announced January screenings and seminars, as well as giving a recipe for Oven Beef Stew (for two). The Intermountain McKay-Dee Health Center's Senior Health Connection Newslettertor February dealt with how to dispose of leftover medications. It also gave a recipe for Cheese-baked Chicken. Seminars and Screenings at McKay Dee Hospital were listed, as well as information on Seniors using the Cardiac Fitness Institute at McKay-Dee. It also introduced Rebecca Nichols as the new Senior Health Connection Coordinator. The April 2011 Senior Health Connection Newsletter, concerned Fitness for Older Adults, and was distributed at a Senior lunch in March. It gave the dates of April screenings and seminars. It also advised that most Part D Medicare plans will cover the cost of a shingles shot. The McKay-Dee Senior Health Connection Newsletter, for May 2011 was distributed at the Senior Center in April. May is Stroke Awareness Month, and we are reminded to act FAST: Check Face, Arms, Speech for symptoms, and act promptly as Time is very important. TIAs were explained. May seminars and screenings were announced. A stroke presentation will be given May 24, 2011, at 11:30 am. at the Senior Center. Diabetes was the subject of the Intermountain McKay-Dee Senior Health Connection Newsletter, which explained the seriousness and symptoms of the disease. It also listed their seminars and screenings for the month of June, and announced the Senior Picnic on June 24, at Sand Ridge Park. The Senior Health Connection Newsletter for July given out contained the warning about too much sun exposure, told the proper use of sunscreen, to cover-up with clothing, and of the danger of skin cancer. Information was also contained about recognizing skin cancer, and changes in the skin. It also announced a seminar on July 8, 2011, at the McKay Dee Hospital, beginning at 2:30 p.m., with Alice Hirai, RN, speaking about her experiences in one of the camps where Japanese-Americans were forced to move after Pearl Harbor. Mrs. Hirai visits the Senior Center regularly to take blood pressures. She is a former resident of Marriott-Slaterville City At the July 12, 2011, Senior Lunch, technicians from McKay Dee Hospital, drew blood for cholesterol and blood glucose figures, a free service for those who wanted it done. Results, with explanatory handouts were given to those tested. The McKay Dee Hospital Center hosted a "Patio Party by the Pond, on August 18, 2011, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m., which was free to seniors. There was dancing to the "Washington Terrace Variety Band," hors d'oeuvres, and door prizes. Rebecca Nichols gave out the Senior Health Connection Newsletter tor August, which gave information about the importance of foot care. She talked briefly about the things about which seniors need to be concerned. The September 2011 Senior Health Connection Newsletter, gave information about flu vaccine, what is available, and why it is so important to seniors. Dates at Senior Centers for immunizations were listed. Tips on staying well were also given. The Senior Health Connection Newsletter tor December 2011, informed seniors about osteoarthritis, and how to deal with it. 24 |
