Show Marriott-Slaterville Monthly History August 2011 A mid-summer message from Mayor Keith Butler was featured in the August 2011 newsletter, The Pioneer Post. The spring brought real challenges because of the extensive flooding in the community. The Mayor complimented residents for the way that neighbors helped neighbors with sandbagging and many other ways. He gave special appreciation to the wonderful CERT team lead by Dixie and Ken Little. Our CERT team is a model for Weber County. Though the flooding is over for this year, there is much still to do. The city submitted its expenses and a request for river repairs to the county. The county will attempt to obtain funding from FEMA. If this funding is not available, the city must reassess the issues again. The Mayor also asked all residents and neighborhoods to prepare for possible flooding next spring, in case we are in another flood cycle. Flooding has been common in the history of Marriott-Slaterville, preceding the pioneer settlement of this community. The 400 North reconstruction project is wrapping up. A final list of outstanding completion items was submitted to the contractor. Mayor Butler thanked residents and business along the road for their patience during construction, which was an involved project. Road projects planned for this summer include the resurface of 1200 West from 12*> Street to the Weber River, and the resurface of Pioneer Road between S. R. 126 and 2800 West. With last year's projects and those this summer, the road funds are depleted. The City took advantage of the low oil prices last year and got the contracts for this year's projects submitted early to get great savings in construction costs. Citizens must be patient as road fund reserves are rebuilt so the city can continue to operate debt free. Improvements on some parks and grounds are to be completed this summer by the city and the Pioneer Special District. Marriott Park has some small bleachers and additional sod. A scout project installed a land drain in the Slaterville Park. The entryway to Mill Creek Subdivision was landscaped. An expensive moss control system is planned for the Spencer Farms Pond. Scouts also planted trees at the Heritage Park Storm Water Basin, and repainted all the tables at the City Hall Park. Community Gardener, Pam Hunsaker, and City Forester, Jonathan Saunders, help bring beauty to our parks and gardens. All volunteers and our scouts are thanked for their service to the community. The City receives numerous compliments about our community. We must work together to keep it beautiful and safe. AH drought restrictions on watering during the day using the pressurized secondary water system operated by the Pioneer Special District are lifted for 2011. No drought laws will be enforced this year. Use water as needed, but be mindful of waste. It is hoped that the aquifers will be recharged while we enjoy this abundance of water. At the August 18, 2011, City Council Meeting, business licenses were approved for the following: Zeb's Again, LLC, 1690 West 400 North, a restaurant opening at Toads/Mulligan J. Carnahan Insurance, 1294 West 12* Street, State Farm Insurance Eagleye Security Solutions, 3775 W. Pioneer Road, installs security systems, a home occupation. All are in compliance with zoning and were approved unanimously. Resolution 2011-J on adopting the FY 2011-12 interlocal agreement with Weber County for animal services was discussed. This continues the animal control services with the county with a slight increase in cost. The Resolution was approved unanimously. Marriott-Slaterville City has three City Council seats open this year. Dennis Ilium filed for the East District. Rob Smout filed for the West District. Scott VanLeeuwen filed for the At-large seat. Because all seats are uncontested, the city has the option to cancel the 2011 election. Write-in candidates may still file until 5:00 170 |
