Show Marriott-Slaterville Monthly History September 2011 Residents of Marriott-Slaterville are fortunate to have several parks available for our use as individuals or for group activities. Playgrounds, ball areas, and boweries are available at the Marriott Park, the Slaterville Park, and the Clifford and Elizabeth Blair Park and municipal gardens, as well as a developing trail and park on 17* Street which will connect us with West Haven's trail for hikers. Tennis lessons are offered each summer. We have the Easter Egg Hunt, the July 4 Freedom Celebration, Trunk-or-Treat, and a Breakfast with Santa Claus each year. The Pioneer Post lor September 2011, advised us of many activities at the Senior Center. Each Tuesday at 11:30 am. a senior lunch from the Weber-Morgan Nutrition, is served. A donation of $3 for seniors (60 and over) is suggested. Cost for non-seniors is $6. A senior dinner is provided on the third Wednesday each month at 5:00 p.m. These meals provide an opportunity to enjoy nutritious meals and each other's company. Flu vaccinations will be offered at the senior center on October 4, 2011, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., first come, first-serve. Bring your medicare card if a senior; the cost for others will be announced later. Each Thursday a Yoga class for seniors is ably taught by Carolyn Deru, starting at 9:00 am. Also on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. is a line dancing class. Both activities help keep people active and provide positive interaction. Anyone is welcome to attend at no charge. The senior center has the DUP Memorial Library, with books, a few videos, and other resources that may be borrowed at no cost. There are four public computers you can use to access the internet or do homework. The City Hall Park, (Clifford and Elizabeth Blair Park) behind the Senior Center is for public use. As noted, it has a bowery, playground and municipal gardens. The bowery can be reserved for a half-day for $25.00. The gardens are maintained by community gardener volunteers, and are available for rent for receptions and similar activities for $200 for residents, $400 for non-residents. What great activities! At the City Council Meeting held on September 15, 2011, a business license was approved for Smoker's Delite, LLC, 1167 West 12* Street, tobacco sales. This business goes before the Planning Commission on September 20, 2011, for consideration for a conditional use permit. Councilman Rob Smout asked if the license can be revoked if the business if found to be selling illegal drugs. City Administrator Bill Morris said the conditional use permit and business license can be revoked for illegal activity, and that the health department will do random checks on the business. It can sell legal smoking paraphernalia, including pipes. The Council voted unanimously to approve the business license, subject to the Conditional Use Permit granted by the Planning Commission. Randy Jeffries and Andy Neff presented information to update the Council about new alternatives in the West Davis Corridor. UDOT, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement for the potential corridor in western Davis and Weber Counties. Following the February 2011 public open houses and comments period, the West Davis Corridor Study Team evaluated the comments and feedback from all entities. No final decisions have been made. The refined alternatives are one more step in the process and alignments can still change. A final alternative will not be selected until the end of the study in 2013. At this time, the alternative is to end at 4000 South, and 4700 West will be widened to a 5 lane road. This is a long range plan for approximately the years 2030-2040. The alternatives do not propose construction in or extend into Marriott-Slaterville City. Councilman Scott VanLeeuwen said he is in favor of the alternative outlined at the meeting, because the traffic will not be brought to 12* Street to be handled at the end of the corridor. 173 |
