According to American City Business Journals, which analyzed federal job numbers, Weber, Davis and Morgan counties logged a 3.73 percent increase in jobs between August 2010 and August 2011. Thumbs down: To a group of lobbyists who are seeking valet parking and membership in a gym on Capitol Hill. We think that's a trial balloon that can be popped quite easily. Lobbyists already have many chances to influence Utah legislators; they don't need to be pumping iron with them. As for valet parking, forget about it. Thumbs up: To the Weber School Foundation, which surprised Bonneville High School student Jordan Avis with a new basketball wheelchair before a crowd at the school. It was a cool thing to do, particularly since Avis had been wearing out his regular wheelchair due to his enthusiastic embrace of the sport. Thumbs down: To national oil refineries that are asking for huge tax refunds in Texas for buying pollution-controlling equipment. That is ludicrous. The oil industry has earned huge profits in the past several years as consumers have had to deal with increasing prices. And, by the way, have readers noticed that even when oil prices decline to $80 a barrel or lower, a gallon of gas in Utah still hovers at $3.50? It didn't used to be that way. Thumbs up: To Top of Utah municipalities Marriott-Slaterville, Huntsville, Elwood, Fielding and Portage, for canceling their November elections. With not enough candidates to have their local elections be competitive, these officials will save thousands of taxpayers' dollars. Thumbs down: To counterfeit prescription medicine peddlers. Drug prices may be too high, but those tempted to buy off the legitimate market run the risk of ingesting toxic substances or incorrect doses. For more information, go to http:AWARERx.com.
