Show Marriott-Slaterville History November 2011 A letter has been received from the George Wahlen Veteran's Nursing Home on 1200 West, asking that 1200 West between the Farr West border and 400 North be named Veteran's Way. Mr. Slater and President Dennis Ilium have a concern with named roads, as they are hard to find, for fire and police personnel as well as individuals. Mr. Morris said the road signs would have both 1200 West and the street name on the street address sign. A motion by Councilman Scott VanLeeuwen to designate the portion of 1200 West between the Farr West border and 400 North as Veteran's Way failed on a roll call vote, with Mr. Slater and President Ilium voting nay, and Mr. Hodson and Mr. VanLeeuwen voting aye, ending with a tie. Councilman Rob Smout was absent, and Mr. VanLeeuwen encouraged a reconsideration of the issue at the January meeting. The 2011-12 Capital Improvement Plan was discussed. The projects that were completed in the last year were reviewed, and proposed projects discussed. The plan is required to be eligible for CDBG funds, which it is hoped can be used to complete outstanding projects. A public hearing is required, and the matter was tabled until the next meeting after the public hearing, by a unanimous vote. The city has not received checks from FEMA for the spring 2011 floods, which should come in 3 or 4 different checks. Repair of the river bank was denied by FEMA, which stated river banks are not public facilities within the meaning of the Stafford Act. It is hoped that other federal agencies will help residents affected by flooding, such as giving conservation easements on their property so it can flood and take the pressure off the river. A lot of land was removed from the subdivision on 3650 West by the river. In reviewing Trunk-or-Treat at the council meeting, Mayor Butler felt it was a great success. In addition to thanking the committee, he also thanked Councilman Kim Slater, and his wife, Dorothy, for their costumes, and Councilman Scott VanLeeuwen for his help. The council meeting next month will start with a work session at 6:00 p.m., with the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. and the Christmas party will begin at 7:00 p.m. Mayor Butler congratulated the council members who have run for office again. The city saved money by not having an election.. Pam Hunsaker has moved to Washington, and Sandra Saunders has agreed to replace her in the position of Community Gardener. Pioneer Road in front of Vern Butler's house was damaged by the spring flooding, and will be fixed. Mr. VanLeeuwen said there is a quite large drop-off on 700 South 2000 West, and wants the city to put some gravel in it. Mr. Slater said Bona Vista chipped the asphalt in front of his house when they were making a repair and would like it filled.
