Spring Clean-up Spring is coming! Its time to clean up the house, yard, and barn and get rid of all that junk. To help you during Spring Cleaning Days, the City provides a dumpster at Marriott Park and at Slaterville Park. Residents are free to use these dumpsters which are paid from the City's beautification fund. The dumpsters are available at both parks April 15-17. When dumping, please put all garbage completely inside the dumpster and not on the ground. This service is sponsored by Marriott-Slaterville City and Waste Management. The Ten Basics of Square Foot Gardening There has been a lot of interest in square foot gardening. For those interested in gardening, now is the time to Itart preparing for your spring planting. 1. Layout - square foot gardens are arranged in squares rather than rows. Lay-out is typically 4' X 4f planting boxes. 2. Boxes - build elevated planting boxes and fill them with a fresh new soil mix. 3. Aisles - space the boxes around 3' apart to so that there are walking aisles to access boxes. 4. Soil Mix - fill boxes with a special soil mix (like Mel's mix): 1/3 blended compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 coarse vermiculite. 5. Grid - make a permanent square foot grid across the top of each planting box. 6. Care - avoid walking on your growing soil. Tend your garden from the aisles. 7. Select - plant a different flower, vegetable or herb crop in each square foot, using 1, 4, 9, or 16 plants per square foot. 8. Planting - conserve seeds by plant only a pinch (2 or 3 seeds) per hole. Place transplants in a slight saucer-shaped depression. 9. Water - you can water by hand or from a bucket of sun warmed water. 10. Harvest - when you finish harvesting a square foot, add compost and replant it with anew and different crop. This is a fun way to garden! You will enjoy the crop diversity and the quantity you can produce in a 4' X 4' area! Happy Gardening!
