Gardening Tips for May Spring is arriving late this year, so here are some tips to help with your yard and vegetable garden for the month! Good Luck! Watch for aphids on roses, perennials, and spiraea. Spray aphids with a strong stream of water or insecticidal soap. Fertilize the roses. Deadhead spring bulbs. Don't cut back the leaves on bulbs until the foliage begins to fade and turn brown so bulbs can get food produced by the leaves. Plant trees, shrubs, and perennials. It is not too late to apply a pre-emergent herbicide to control crabgrass and other annual weeds. Be careful not to use this chemical on vegetable garden or flower beds that will be seeded later. Apply and work in compost or peat moss to increase water retention in garden beds. Plant annuals and fertilize two weeks later. Plant all warm season vegetables. Aerate lawns to improve supply of air, water, and nutrients to turf root systems. Power raking only where extreme amounts of thatch have built up in the turf. Mow Kentucky bluegrass and other cool season turf grasses to a height of 2" to 3" inches. This promotes root growth, conserves water, reduces weeds, and makes a healthier lawn. Fertilize lawn with 1 lb. Nitrogen/1000 SF of lawn, (i.e., 16-0-0 = weight of bag divided by 16 percent nitrogen = total lbs of nitrogen in bag X 1000 tells you how many SF of lawn bag will do to reach 1 lb. Nitrogen/1000 SF of lawn). Apply a systemic grub control as needed. Control broadleaf weeds in the lawn. Apply organic mulch to bare ground (2" to 4" thick) for conservation and weed control. Set out hardier potted plants like geraniums. Prune all spring-flowering shrubs by removing older stems, broken, dead, or crossing branches. Take a class to leara about native plants for water conservation, perennial and herb care, or how to use stone in the landscape.
