Show Publisher How rare is it that a school board is entirely composed of the parents of current students? Monty and Susan Hardy, the organizers of the Venture Academy say that it was a very difficult four years to pass all the requirements to achieve approval for a Charter School. The Charter Schools are funded as other government schools are, by the WPU (Weighted Pupil Unit) state income tax funds - with the exception that they are required to finance the physical facilities from those funds - while the other government schools are not. Thus, the actual cost to the tax payer for education of a student is less for a Charter School. ^ The Hardys' and other ^parent's motivation for the organization of the Venture Academy was their desire to have more influence on the curriculum and educational objectives for the students. The Venture Academy is required by the state to accomplish a state standard for "core curriculum", but they feel there is much more to education than the core curriculum. Susan indicated that a major objective is to teach the students that the "American Dream" of success is accomplished by hard work and repeated efforts. The organization of the classroom is not the typical grade and age segregation. The classes have different grade levels and Venture Academy located at 495 N. 1500 W. in Marriot-Slaterville ages, with each student working at their own speed and ability. Each student's progress is the focus rather than the definition of grade and rank compared to his peers. The objective is to create an environment for the student of satisfaction for personal progress and enjoyment in increased understanding and productivity. Howard Brinkerhoff, a teacher with extensive experience in other schools, indicated that he is very impressed with the difference this focus makes. He says he was not converted at first, but now is a believer. The school's activities are aimed at helping the students become interactive with each other, and with the real world, so that their education is not just book learning but one of experience in the real world. The school does not use text books. One object is to allow a very talented student to progress as fast as he can to avoid the situation where he becomes bored. Other students seeing his progress may be impressed to follow. The teacher's role is to help the student know where to go to find the information rather than The Board of Directors are Parents at Venture Academy L-R, Tracy Nelsen, Tara Weaver, Kathryn Clark, Justin Fawson and Susan & Monty Hardy(President) 33 rt- 3.
