Show June 26, 2011 . MIKE BRICE/Standard-Examiner correspondent Mel and Joan Meyerhomffer stole the show when they arrived in their ! 1960 Ford Thunderbird. Oraggin' the 'Vard Class of '61 winds it up, blows it out By MICHAEL BRICE Standard-Examiner Correspondent OGDEN — The class of 1961 Bonneville and Weber high school graduates turned heads as they roared down Washington Boulevard Saturday in their cool cars reminiscent of the many nights they spent draggin' the 'Vard. Back when gas was less than 20 cents a gallon, the then-high school students would cruise Washington Boulevard, which served as their Facebook. Separated in 1960 when Bonneville High School opened, the 1961 classes of Bonneville and Weber high schools reunited Saturday for a car rally and picnic. Approximately 30 cars gathered at Bonneville High School before parading down Washington Boulevard for a rendezvous with about a dozen cars driven by Weber High School graduates at 12th and Washington, the original location of Weber High School. After a brief stop, the group headed to a barbeque in Huntsville. Although five decades have passed, it seemed just like yesterday as they swapped stories standing outside their cars, much like they did when they were parked at Mason's or Combe's drive-ins. The drive-ins that served as pit stops and turnarounds along Washington Boulevard are long gone, but the memories remain. Sitting with friends in a 1963 Lincoln convertible, 1961 Bonneville graduate John Marriott remembers cruising down Washington as a teen. 22' |
