Show MIKE BRICE/Standard-Examiner correspondent From left, 1961 Bonneville High School graduates Rod Thatcher, Carlyle Shaw, Jim Stegen and Larry Taylor talk about their days of draggin' the 'Vard in front of Stegen's 1932 Ford Roadster. Cruisin From 6A since the drag racing days of the early '60s. "The cops were a little more lenient then," he said. "If you didn't do anything too bad, they left you alone." The idea for a car rally generated from Gene Sorens- en, who remembered how important cruising the boulevard was to the graduates as teens. "It was the thing to do," he said. "Everyone wanted to have the cool car." Saturday he was driving a 1965 Buick, a newer version of the 1955 Buick he had in high school. Dennis Heiner stayed at Weber High School after the split and graduated in 1961. "I was disappointed to lose classmates and it hurt the track team," he said of the split. The track team might have finished first instead of second at state if it were not for the split, he recalled. Heiner, like the other Weber and Bonneville graduates, remembers racing on Washington. His father had wanted him 'The cops were a little more lenient then. If you didn't do anything too bad, they left you alone!' — JIM STEGEN, Bonneville High'61 "We would turn up the radio and roll the windows down. Those were great times!' — PAMELA (BAUR) BRIMHALL, Bonneville High '61 to wait until college for a car, but he couldn't. "I wanted a car so bad," he said. "It was a Mercury with an Oldsmobile engine." Stealing the show were Mel and Joan Meyerhomffer, who arrived in their 1960 mint green Ford Thunder- bird. It wasn't the same car they had in high school, but it brought back memories for many of the graduates. Joan Meyerhomffer wasn't as disappointed with the split as some. "It was fun to go to a brand new school," she said of the one year at Bonneville High School. Pamela (Baur) Brimhall, a 1961 Bonneville graduate, and her husband Dar win Brimhall, a 1960 Weber graduate, were cruising in a yellow 1969 VW Bug convertible. The pair remember their first date when they carved a pumpkin and put it in the back window of Darwin's 1954 Chevy as they cruised down Washington. "We would turn up the radio and roll the windows down," she said. "Those were great times." Marie (Medell) Wilcox and her husband, Boyd Wilcox, joined the car rally in their 1970 AMX. Marie remembers the racing and the people watching as a teen on Washington Boulevard. "It was just like 'American Graffiti,'" she said. 229 |
