Show Loan Fund ‘Living Memorial" To Blair's Val and Karen Lofgreen once won a car at an Ogden market witha jingle. “We purchase locally Try never to shirk For buying in Ogden Provides us with work.”’ They were expressing a longtime philosophy of Karen’s parents, Seth and Zella Cowan Blair. The Blairs had always stressed supporting local business and the local educational institution, Weber State College. While Mr. and Mrs. Blair had not had the opportunity for a college education, they considered it to be the most important thing they could do for their seven children. Lofgreen, who served on the alumni board and was the originator of the term ‘‘Feline Follies;’’ and Mrs. Ned L. (Margaret) Favero, advisor of the active LaDianaeda sorority to which all four girls belonged, and recently elected to the alumni board. The boys belonged to the Excelsior fraternity, which has since become Beta. Interest in the activities at WSC had begun in earnest when the sons and daughters became involved in the various functions on campus and since the Blairs were not without a child in their home for 41 continuous years they had many occasions to attend events that involved one of their family. When the new campus was being built Mr. Blair was approched for a donation. He agreed to make one with the stipulation that the whole family be made alumni of the college. At that time the two youngest girls were not yet college age. It was agreed and Karen and Margaret became card-carrying alumni before they ever entered WSC. The Blairs were among the first to purchase a block of tickets when the field house was new. They attended as a family, parents, sons and daughters, and their husbands and wives. They made a good-sized booster section of their own and appeared at every game as well as plays and musicals. Even though the elder Blairs have since passed away the family carries on the tradition and still have their block of seats. They have already purchased seats for the new Dee Events Cen- ter in their father’s name. When Mrs. Blair died in April of 1975 the faculty and children at Mar Lon Hills Elementary school, where Mrs. Lofgreen teaches sixth grade, wanted to do something lasting for the memory of Mrs. Blair. It was a gesture of love and affection for Mrs. Lofgreen. Dr. Betty Nowak knew that the Blair family had been avid WSC boosters and so she called Alan Hall, WSC alumni director, telling him of their desire. Dr. Nowak told the contact with the arrangements were family to meet with Dean Hurst, family of college made for Mr. Hall assistant to her and the and the President for College Development, who suggested a “loan memorial fund’’ be set up as a memorial to their mother. Since Mr. Blair had died four years previously the family wished to make the memorial for both of them. In addition to the contributions to the fund by the faculty and children at Mar Lon Hills Elementary, friends and relatives also contributed to the “living” memorial. Family members have committed themselves to donating an additional $10 to the fund every Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, on their parents birthdays and at Christmas, thereby increasing the “Joan fund.” They hope eventually to turn it into a scholarship. The fund will be available to students who need short-term aid to assist them in completing a quarter or enable them to “make. it until their pay check comes.” The borrowing student will only be charged $5 to pay for the costs of bookkeeping but it will be interest free. The Seth and Zella Blair family are pleased with the “living” memorial to their parents who were always advocates of education and Weber State College. They feel nothing would make their parents happier than to know that students were being aided to stay in college by a fund in their name.
