Show Page 2 Weber State College is Utah's Total College, Says President ‘“‘Weber State College is, in a real sense, Utah’s total college,”’ said WSC President Joseph L. Bishop. “Our mission is to take students from where they are, wherever they may be, and assist them individually to reach their full potential.’’ We offer a full array of courses which -makes it possible.”’ Responding to Dr. T.H. Bell’s desire to find out what and how graduates of institutions are doing, Dr. Bishop stated that in certain areas it is very easy to track students. “For example in our Skills | Center North program our task is vocational training and placement. We know the entry and exit skills of every student, where they are placed and what kind of employee they become. In that program the record is clear and very impressive. We place about 83 per cent of our graduates.”’ Dr. Bishop feels we should not look just to employment as an indicator of wortr of a college education. © ‘There are those who suggest that college graduates can’t find jobs. While they may not find the specific job they want, it should also be recognized that they find jobs much more readily than does a person who only has a high school education.”’ He pointed out that employment isn’t the only objective of higher education. ‘“‘What is more critical, in my judgment, is higher education. It is naive to believe that in today’s highly competitive society a high school education is sufficient for leadership,”’ Dr. Bishop said. “*It is more appropriate to look towards life-time learning concepts, in a process which never ends. The challenge of change to accommodate such concepts will be a significant factor for administrators and faculty alike in the next decade,’ Dr. Bishop Said. Dr. Bishop noted _ that education takes place within an environment that stimulates that process and Weber State has changed _ drastically, creating an improved collegial climate. The 12,000 seat Dee Events Center will provide adequate facilities for special events, ranging from symphony and ballet to-athletic contests. “The addition of the new technical education building, ‘combined with the Stewart OUR MISSION is to assist students to individually reach their full potential, said Weber State College President Joseph L.
