Show Page 8 New Coach And Staff Recruiting Pete Riehlman, veteran of high school, college, and professional coaching ranks, has taken over as the new football coach at Weber State College. He replaces Dick Gwinn, who announced his resignation midway through the past season. The energetic Riehlman, former head coach at Chico State in California and the former line coach of the Hawaii WFL team, immediately. came to campus and assumed his duties Nov. 22. His first priority was to put together a staff which was announced one week later on the 29th. Chosen by Riehlman as_ his assistants were Art Calloway as defensive line coach; Ed Swartz of Santa Barbara as the offensive running back coach; Jim Fassel, an assistant at the University of Utah as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach; Don McCaulley of the University of Utah, the defensive coordinator; and Charles Detwiler, presently the assistant coach at Olympus High School, the secondary coach. “Our priority now that our staff is assembled is to bring talent on campus immediately,’’ said Coach Riehlman. ‘‘There is no reason why Weber State cannot.compete with the Freshman guard Mark Mattos is one reason for the early success enjoyed by the Wildcats. The fired-up ’Cats turned back a pair of instate foes, defeating Brigham Young University 96-75 and edging the University of Utah 75-74. The twin wins give the Wildcats a big edge in their efforts to capture the new symbol of instate supremacy, the Old Oquirrh Bucket. “Both of the games_ were emotionally charged,” commented Coach Neil McCarthy, ‘‘and I was very proud of our young team for the poise that they showed. I feel our key to victory in both games was the things we have been stressing all year: team unity, discipline, and condition. The games were especially valuable to us as confidence builders for our young players.” The Wildcats were the biggest question mark in the state before the season started. With only 1 full-time starter back off of last year’s team, Weber was heavily loaded with newcomers who had never seen a moment’s major college action. Included on the 15-man roster were six returning lettermen, seven freshmen, one junior college transfer, and one redshirt transfer. It was a question of how well and how quickly the team could gel. Early indications seem that the team is far ahead of schedule. The new players lead the way in the early going for the Wildcats. JC transfer Stan Mayhew, who broke all of Spencer Haywood’s records at Trinidad Junior College, was the leading scorer and rebounder on the team, while freshman guard Mark Mattos was second in scoring and first in assists. Another freshman, forward Bruce Collins, could be one of the most electrifying performers ever at Weber and should leave an indelible mark on the record books. The team openers against the down-state foes also set another record for Weber State. It was the first time that Wildcat Gym had seen back-to-back sellout crowds. The month of December will be a busy one for the Wildcats as they face a tough PAC-8 contender Oregon State twice, making a return visit to Utah, travel to Utah State and Long Beach State and compete in the nation’s top tournament, the Far West Classic in Portland. League play for the Wildcats starts the first weekend in January when the two Montana schools come to town.
