Show Yocum’'s Donate Historical eS Collection to WSC The high adventure and intrigue of discovering valuable treasures ‘in an old trunk in the attic’”’ actually happened to former Weber State College student, don (Phyllis Burnett) with a few variations theme. The “‘treasures”’ were flag with 34 uneven — e stars dated Mrs. Gor- Yocum — to the old a 5’ by 10’ handsewn 1861, and rare deeds written on parchment dating back to 1670, with signatures of prominent men from the Revolutionary period. Mrs. Yocum was led by a “cleaning-out mood’”’ to tackle some old boxes that had been moved to their home in Philadelphia from Mr. Yocum’s father’s law firm. The firm dated back to 1887 and had been near Independence Hall. The documents discovered predated that and had probably been brought to the firm by lawyers or clients. Mrs. Yocum’s brother, Dr. Keith R. Burnett, an associate professor at Weber State, helped the Yocums make arrangements and the couple donated the valuable collection to the WSC library special collections. The Yocums feel that the articles selected for the collection ‘“‘span a significant period in our history from European immigration, revolution, Indian Wars and the Civil War period.”’ The handsewn flag is signed by W. E. Garrett and Sons, 246 S. Front St., Phila., April 30, 1861, just 18 days after the first shot of the Civil War. The curator of the museum at Gettysburg National Park and Battlefield believes the flag to be an authentic relic of the 1860’s as well as a confederate sword also in the collection. Deeds date from the period of King Charles 11, 1670, through Thomas Mifflin, an important person in the First Continental Congress, 1744-1800. Most of the deeds are for personal property. Also among the items in the Yocum gift was a. Civil War soldier’s cap which bears on its top a shamrock which was the symbol worn by units of the Irish Brigade. The cap belonged to Gordon Yocum’s grandfather, Major Joseph Warren Yocum, a member of the 116th Pennsylvania In- Gordon and Phyllis Yocum and Craige Hall, WSC valuable “treasures,”’ including a 34-star Civil War donated o the Special Collections. director of libraries, look over flag found by Mrs. Yocum and fantry. wilt > ae nai, patna tes| ~ Class Notes LT.
