Show Undefeated Season by Brad Larsen Sports Information Director After losing the season opener to Utah State in Logan, 91-84 in overtime, the Weber State Wildcats have put the offense into higher gear, reeling off nine straight victories heading into the Las Vegas Holiday Classic, Dec. 28-29 in Las Vegas. The Wildcat’s first round opponent is Michigan State, last year’s NCAA National champions. In that game, Head Coach Neil McCarthy is looking for his 100th win at Weber State. He has an overall 4% year record of 99-46 (.682). During the nine-game winning streak, the ‘Cats have defeated Utah (91-79), Utah State (79-73) at home, while taking road victories at New Mexico (80-70) and Seattle (80-71). Bruce “Hi-C” Collins (6-5, Senior, Rock Spring, WY) became the school’s all-time leading scorer with a 19 point effort against Puget Sound on Dec. 8. It gave him 1,565 points, breaking Willie Sojourner’s mark of 1,563. Collins is also one of the Bruce collins leading scorer nations top free throw shooters, hitting 32-35 from the line for .914 percent. Bruce is averaging 18.4 points and 4,7 rebounds a game and with a 17 point average throughout the rest of the season, he could become the all-time leading scorer in the Big Sky Conference. David Johnson (6-8, Senior, Loomis, CA) and Richard Smith (7-1, Senior, Green River, WY) were, along with Collins, First-Team Big Sky picks last season and are carrying a heavy load again this season. Johnson had his career high game (24) against New Mexico. David is averaging 16.7 a game. Smith has a 14.7 scoring and 7.3 rebound average and is one of the top shooters in the country hitting 50-82 shots (.610). Mark Mattos (6-0, Senior, Santa Barbara CA) is the other senior letterman. Mattos is having his best season since he was a freshman with a 7.8 scoring mark and is averaging over seven assists a game. The fifth starter is junior ‘Gerald Mattinson (6-6, Rock Springs, WY) who is second to Smith in rebounding with a 7.1 average and is scoring over 10 points a game. Todd Harper (6-4, Sophomore, San Diego, CA) and Steve Condie (6-8, Junior, Salt Lake City, UT) are both playing important roles coming off the bench. Harper is a versatile swing-man playing both guard and forward. Condie is Smith’s replacement at center, but can also go in as a forward when needed. David Penilton (6-4, Senior, Sacramento, CA) returns for his final season. David was injured in an auto accident last year and did not play. He is one of the hardest workers on the team and is probably one of the best all-around athletes. Two juniors college transfers have helped ease the depth a guard. Eric Watson (6-0, Sophomore, Detroit, MI) and Tim Doolan (5-9, Junior, Peoria, IL) have been pushing Mattos for a starting berth, creating some good competition in practice. Doolan injured his leg in the second Utah State encounter, but is expected to return sometime in mid-January. Three freshman to watch for over the next four years have made a good transition from their high school experiences. Royal Edwards (6-6, Sacramento, CA) was the Most Valuable Player in northern California last year had has appeared in eight varsity games this season. Brian Devincenzi (6-8, Sevier, . UT) was Utah’s Class 2A Player of the Year last season. His raw talent hasn’t gone unnoticed in practice and with some time he should develop into an excellent player inside. Travis Salem (6-6, El Paso, TX) is an excellent shooter from the 15 to 17 foot range, but his greatest asset may be his outstanding passing ability. After going 25-9 last season, it may be hard to duplicate such an effort. There is a big incentive, however, for the team to reach the NCAA playoffs, a feat they have accomplished each of the last two years. For the first time ever, Weber State is hosting the FIRST and SECOND rounds of the NCAA 1979-80 Basketball Tournament, Thursday and Saturday, March6 and 8 in the Dee Events Center. A total of six teams are scheduled to appear in Ogden with two winners advancing to the Western Regional in Tuscon, AZ. Those persons wishing to purchase tickets for this event may contact the Weber State College Ticket Office at (801) 626-6550. | of yo | They week Class Notes JUDITH G.
