Huff, also a freshman, is from Worland, Wyoming, where she was the Wyoming State mile and 880-yard run champion in 1979. For the remainder of the season Huff placed seventh in the Boise State Open Cross Country Meet, 17th in the Red Hills Classic Invitational at Idaho State, seventh in the Utah State Championship at Logan and 28th in the Region 7 AIAW meet held at Utah State University. Arnold finished 21st in the Red Hills Classic, 8th in the Utah State Championship and 36th in the Regional meet. A note of interest regarding these outstanding freshmen is that Weber State alumni’s and former quarter-miler for WSC, Steve R. Cranfill, helped Coach Bob Hill recruit Patty Huff. Coach Hill, by the way, is also a Weber State alumnus. Volleybali Although Weber State had a disappointing volleyball season ending with a 3-19 overall and 1-9 conference record, the team was more exciting and better than the record indicates. With the exception of their match against top-ranked Utah State, the Lady Wildcats played all of their conference matches to four and five games--most of them close and losing by only two points. , The team was young this year with only one senior on the squad but has some real talent in juniors Penny Wanberg, Cindee Secrist and Karen Porter as well as sophomore Diane Rich. Page 10 2h Ayia ® Preview of Lady Tennis The Lady Wildcat tennis team went 1-12 for the fall season and 0-8 in conference play. Weber State had a 16-94 record in match play with freshman Birgitta Samuelsson accounting for eight of the 16 Weber wins. Samuelsson is from Linkoping, Sweden, and holds the number one singles and doubles spot for the Lady Wildcats. The women’s tennis team will resume their spring schedule on March 1. Keith Cox, coach of the women’s tennis team, is a Weber State alumnus and was a Big Sky Conference tennis champion while attending Weber State. Golf In their second year of competition, the Lady Wildcat golf team showed marked improvement with the aid of freshman Lori Vegwert of Burley, Idaho, and sophomore Denise Bondurant of Cayucos, Calif. Weber State took third place in the Lady Falcon Invitational at Colorado Springs to start out their fall schedule. They posted a team score of 1031--a marked improvement over last year when the golf team never broke 1100. The following weekend, the Lady Wildcats took fifth place at the BYU Invitational with an all-time low team score of 1015. Weber State finished behind UCLA, BYU, New Mexico and Washington--all ranked in the nation’s top 11. The women’s golf team competed in the prestigious Dick McGuire Invitational (formerly named the Lady Tucker Invitational) and took 20th place in a field of 20. This tournament pits the nation’s top 25 teams plus teams from Region 7 (of which Weber State is included). Although competing against 19 of the top 25 schools in the country, Weber State posted a 1038 team score and WSC’s Denise Bondurant was ahead of 48 opponents from top 20 teams after the first two rounds of play. The lady golfers finished out their fall season by playing in the 36-hole Sacramento State Invitational and the Stanford Invitational where they posted a team score of 1054. The Lady Wildcats will resume their spring schedule in January when they travel to San Diego to compete in the Lady Aztex Invitational. Former Weber College alumnus and golf coach Mike Farrell was exceptionally pleased with the steadiness of play shown by the women’s team Wildcat To date the Lady Wildcat basketball team has completed about a third of its schedule and after 10 games, holds a record of 6-4. Returning starters from last season include 5’4” guard Mechell Fowden, 5’7” guard Penny Wanberg and 61” center Jenny Wilkening--all juniors. Wanberg is currently leading the Wildcats in scoring and assists with 17.5 points per game and a total of 34 assists. Also returning from the 1978-79 squad are Cindy Carlson, 5’8” senior forward, and 5’8” junior forwards Jodi DeRouchey and Mary Maruri. Co-captains for this season are Mary Maruri and Jenny Wilkening. Lost to the squad due to graduation were Janet Beene and all-conference players Ann Avondet and Kathy Miller. However, Miller is back with the Lady Wildcats this year in the capacity of assistant to Head Coach Jane Miner. The newcomers include four freshman and one junior college transfere. From the local area there is 5’9” guard Ann Maruri from Ogden High and 60” forward Suzanne Crowell from East High in Salt Lake City. Although Brigham Young and Utah remain on the sechdule, those games will not count in the conference standings.
