Reach Goal - 20 Games Won! By John The Weber State Wildcats conclude their regular season play by reaching a goal aspired to by all teams and attained by relatively few — the 20 game winning season. Like all worthwhile goals, however, the Wildcat’s 20-game season did not come easy. In fact, just two weeks ago, the overall Weber record stood 14-10, but the ’Cats turned on a six-game winning streak to chock up their ninth 20-game season in the fourteen years of their existence. The Wildcats did it the hard way, too, against top caliber competition and plagued by injuries and other problems. Weber started the season by playing a vigorous schedule in December which included over 10,000 miles of travel and head-to-head competition with such _ outstanding teams as the University of Hawaii, Austin Peay, San Jose State, Utah State, Utah and Brigham Young. Along the way. the Wildcats picked up top honors at the Evansville Invitational and defeated the University of Utah in the first game ever between the two in Ogden. The preliminaries out of the road, the Wildcats prepared for their conference season, but in the first game of the new year, the troubles started in earnest. Starting guard Chip Harper was released from the team, and his replacement John Freed immediately suffered a knee cartilage damage. The ’Cats were forced to go with third-stringer Dick Hunsaker, who promptly proved that he was the right man at the right time Although they Peterson had adequate strength at guard, the Wildcats were still nervous about the obvious lack of depth. Impressive wins over the first two conference opponents, Oral Roberts and Long Beach State followed in succession, and then disaster struck again. Al DeWitt, the leading rebounder on the team and the second leading scorer, suffered a double barrelled injury at the first road game at Northern Arizona. DeWitt severely cut his right hand and broke a bone in his left hand, which sent him to the sideline during a critcal period for the Wildcats. Al missed six games, including the Northern Arizona rematch, the first Utah State clash, and both conference games against Boise and Idaho State. Again it was an outstanding play of a fill-in, Jim Erickson, that allowed the Wildcats to win three of six games and stay in the running for the conference championship. It was during that period that Weber dropped their only home game, a_ two-point decision to Boise State. The Wildcats went on the road to Montana and met further problems as they lost two; but from then on out it was all wins for Weber as they gained revenge against both Utah State, Montana hosted President Joseph L.
