Show SPORTS — Class Notes Zimmerman Picked by Pros. Blake “‘Zeke” Zimmerman, Weber State catcher, was listed in the recent draft by the major league baseball clubs. Zimmerman was chosen by St. Louis in the 31st round and will get a shot at the big league in the Cardinal organization. The gritty catcher led the Wildcats in hitting with a .285 average, in home runs with 4, in hits with 45, and in RBI’s with 28. He had only four errors in 335 chances. Zimmerman played four years at Weber State and earned all-conference outfield honors in 1970. This past season he was named as the Big Sky all-tournament catcher and was on the second allconference team. Zeke played his high school ball at Orem High School. Marigney Signs Basketball Letter Weber State College has just inked Paul Marigney, one of the most outstanding and heavily recruited prepsters in the state of California, to an athletic scholarship and national letter of intent. Pre-season evaluators selected the McClymond’s High School star as one of the top 100 schoolboy players in the United States. Marigney will join several other of the top players in Northern California including 6 -6 Mike Moynihan, 6 -7 Al DeWitt, and 6 -5 Steve Gemelos, as candidates for the Weber ia Coach Gene Visscher Visscher Heads for Latin America Weber Sate basketball coach Gene to Visscher will leave for Bolivia, July 9, for conduct a series of basketball clinics coaches and players in the South American country. Visscher’s trip is sponsored by the Boliva Basketball Federation in conjunction with Partners of the Americas. Partners of the Americas is an organization committed to fostering a closer relationship and understanding between the people of Latin h America, and the United States throug in personal involvement by private citizens self-help projects. National co-ordinator for the program is former University of Utah basketball coach Jack Gardner, who heads the Inter-American Exchange Program. Coach Visscher will be based in LaPaz and will travel around Bolivia accompanied by an interpreter. During his three week tour the Wildcat head coach will instruct the Bolivian athletes and coaches in the fundamentals of basketball. He will teach various drills and practice techniques which will help increase the skills and knowledge of the Bolivian people in the sport of basketball. Visscher’s tour will end July 31, when he will return to Ogden. MACFARLANE, ’41, Ogden municipal leader has been elected president of the Social Service Coordinating Council. In addition to serving as assistant mayor of Ogden, Mr. Macfarlane is currently in his ‘second one-year term as chairman of the Weber Area Council of Governments and is serving his 4th term as City Councilman. In his new post Mr. Macfarlane will be responsible for agency programs geared toward the development of social policy and action to meet the needs of the community. GORDON T. ALLRED, 49. Weber State College faculty for 9 years has completed the requirements for a PhD degree in creative writing and modern literature at the University of Utah. Dr. Allred is the author of 6 books, and several short stories, ariticles and poems. His best seller, a by co-authored was Kamikaze, prosperous businessman in Japan, Yasuo Kuwahara, who is also a friend of Dr. Allreds. ’61, received a JAMES R. HAGEN, fellowship in the amount of $4,400 from the department of HEW for graduate studies in the History of India. Following Mr. Hagen’s graduation from the University of Utah, he spent two years in India working with the Peace Corps. He is married to the former Mardee Wayment. MICHAEL D. MURDOCK, ’60, has been named director of the Northern District of the American Cancer Society. In addition to his work with the various county units Mr. Murdock will be active in recruiting and orienting key volunteers to work in fund drives to raise money for cancer education, research, and services. Among his varied responsibilities Mr. Murdock is presently on the board of directors of the Alumni Association at Weber State College. JOHN R. EVANS, ’65. has been appointed to the newly established post of coordinator ‘of educational service at the Utah State Industrial School. In this position he will coordinate educational classes offered at the state school with the individual needs of the student. He will also be the assistant principal. He is married to the former Jill Sparrow. ’65, was R. BALDWIN, PARLEY awarded a juris doctorate degree from the University of Utah. While at the University he was a recipient of the American Jurisprudence Book Award in constitutional law, and was a member of the prosecutor intern program. He is presently employed by Salt Lake County and plans to receive a commission with the U.S. Army in the near future. MICHAEL M. WILLIAMS, ’66, has been appointed administrative director of the Four Corner Comprehensive Mental Health Center. He is married to the former Carol Hains. BRENT MCBRIDE, ’66, was elected Educators of the Ogden president Association for year 1972-73. A teacher in the Ogden District for 13 years, he also holds a masters degree from BYU. WILLIAM B. HANDLEY, ’67, a varsity football player in 1966, has now graduated with a doctorate degree in management. He holds the faculty rank of assistant professor at W.S.C. ° PERRY PEREA, ’67, former student body president and member of the Blue Key Fraternity has been awarded a doctorate of dental surgery from Northwestern Dental School. De. Perea is married to the former Diane Collopy, and now plans to practice dentistry in the Chicago area. |
