Library was dedicated and named May 7 in honor of a couple who have given service, time, monetary gifts and love to the college. The library was named the “Stewart Library” for Donnell B. and Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart. They have designated $1 million as a future endowment fund source for the library. The Institutional Council and college administration chose to memorialize the newly built and remodeled facility in their honor. The Stewart’s have served on many boards in a myriad of civic, church, club and community en- deavors including hospital board and volunteer service, cancer. The Donnell B. and Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart Their monetary gifts have assisted hundreds of students in their academic attainments through college loan and scholarship funds. They have donated academic and scientific equipment, museum displays, library funds and special collections as well as the Campus Bell Tower and Carillon: A million dollar gift was donated to the Dee Events Center and another $1.5 million deferred gift to be utilized for the development of programs of excellence at the college. The “Stewart Library’ becomes the first academic building on campus to be named ~ after a donor. The first part of the library was finished in 1965 at the cost of $1.7 million and recently a $3.9 million expansion was completed, a sum that also covered extensive remodeling of the older portion of the building. Dr. Robert A. Clarke said in his dedicatory prayer, ‘May this building be a haven for the knowledge. of mankind where those who hunger for learning and wisdom may be filled.’’ Musical numbers were rendered by WSC Voce Coeds and String Quartet. The completion of the second Phase of the Library building project has doubled the amount of space available for library collections and study facilities.
