SAN FRANCISCO, July 18 The strike in the San Francisco bay area has brought about the following situation: All butcher shops closed. Barber shops closed. Restaurants closed excepting 70 in San Francisco and 22 in Oakland. Work suspended on the San Francisco Oakland Bay bridge. Two of San Franciscos three street car systems tied up. One San Francisco Bay ferry system closed. All steel mills closed Seventy per cent of the delivery trucks and wagons of the region idle. Approximately 90 ships idle in the harbor. All slaughter house and packing plants closed. Tailor shops, cleaning and dyeing establishments closed. Oil refineries have reduced operations heavily. All gasoline stations closed except for sale of oil. Most garages and autmobile shops closed or partially closed. Wholesale food houses 80 per cent closed. Garment industry virtually shut down. An estimated 20 per cent of all retail stores of all kinds closed. Many miscellaneous industries and enterprises shut down. An estimated 75000 men on strike and another 75000 forced out by closing of business and industry making approximately 1- per cent of the areas populatin idle. Wednesday, July 18, 1934. I was nominated as National Community Woman for Utah by Judge JH Howell as I had not contemplated such a thing until thirty minutes before I with drew my nomination in favor of Mrs. Jessie Cannon who had served as State Chair women for six years or more.
