Show gardens. The cost to rent a park is $25 for a half day block. The Slaterville Park was rented out for the use of soccer teams on specified days during the summer. Prior to the August 19, 2010, City Council meeting, Councilman Delbert Hodson cleaned out the big drain at the Nature Center, which required two hours labor. The center likes it to back up on their property, as they have a diving board upstream. Councilman Kim Slater was concerned about the storm water ponds on 12*i Street and 1-15 that are not draining properly and would like UDOT contacted about the problem. Bill Morris asked UDOT if the city can use the city inmate crew to clean up the ponds, but UDOT requires a permit. In September Bill Morris and Lynette Deru met with Jerry Goodspeed, Utah Extension Service, concerning the 1-15 detention ponds on 12*i Street. It is doubtful there are any trees which will absorb the water and live, but they are checking for plants that will grow and look better in the basins. In September, after several years of service, Lynette Deru was released from her position over the Clifford and Elizabeth Blair Park at the City complex. She was replaced by Pamela Hunsaker. About mid-October, all city parks were shut down for the season and winterized. The Slaterville Park remained open until after Halloween. Volunteers and others who have worked on, used, and loved our city parks are thanked for their many hours of labor. And All That Fun We are fortunate to have some outstanding fun activities and events sponsored by the city. A community Easter Egg Hunt was held on Saturday, April 3, 2010, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Slaterville Park. It was for children 1 -8. Beside the help from the city, the Les Olson Company donated $250.00, and Operation Happy Kids helped fill plastic eggs with candy for the hunt. Even with cloudy skies, a brisk wind, and the threat of rain, it was a successful (but quick) Easter Egg Hunt. An estimated 125 children, age 1 through 8, attended. Darren and Angela Erwin supervised the Youth Council in carrying out the activities. Prizes, including balls, whistles, rubber ducks, and many other items, were hidden and discovered, as well as the eggs. The Easter Bunny made a special appearance, to the delight of the children. An Evening of Music at the Park, featuring local talent, was held at the City Park on June 26, 2010, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Simmons family, consisting of Ronald (dad), Stephanie (mom), Rylan (19), Shayli (18), Selleka (15), Syvanna (11) and Ryker (9), entertained with violin music, songs, and dance. They ended with the patriotic song, God Bless the U.S.A. Carrie Rice sang and played music she has composed on the guitar. She was joined for one number by her sister Stephanie. What great talent from our own community, and what fun the audience had as we listened. Summer tennis lessons were cancelled for this year. A wonderful Independence Day celebration was held, beginning on July 3, with a 5K run under the guidance of Robert Hirschi. The winner was Josh Dimick. Breakfasts at the Marriott Park and the L. D. S. Bowery, sponsored by community L.D.S. wards, followed. The celebration concluded with a golf tournament on July 5, 2010. The tied winning golf teams were Chad Brown's and Greg Lewis'. On July 3, 2010, a parade began at 10:30 a.m. at the assembly area on 700 South, continuing along 1200 West to the Marriott Park. Darrell Mecham was the Grand Marshall, driven in an antique car by Steven Mecham. June Meyerhoffer, and Carl and Louise Hodson honored long time residents, were driven by Mayor Keith Butler, also in an antique car. The Mayors Trophy went to the Fuller family for their entrant of 14 |
