SUMMER TENNIS LESSONS ARE CANCELLED THIS YEAR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS IN THE HOME For 2010, our CERT team has designated "hazardous materials" at its educational theme. Homes contain an abundant supply of hazardous materials that can harm people or pets. Leftover household products may contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients are hazardous. Americans generate 1.6 million tons of household hazardous waste per year. Most household uses products containing hazardous materials or chemicals, for example: oven cleaners, drain cleaners, toilet cleaners, bleach, pool chemicals, bug sprays, houseplant insecticides, mouse and rat poisons/bait, pesticides, herbicides, gasoline, thinners, antifreeze, propane, batteries, paints, and like material. Below are some tips to follow at home: • Buy chemical only as you need so that you do store excess. • Always read the product labels. Look for labeling that reads "Danger," "Warning," "Caution," "Toxic," "Corrosive," "Flammable," or "Poison." These warnings tell you if the product is harmful to you, your family and the environment, and how to use, store and dispose of it safely. • Keep products containing hazardous materials in their original containers and never remove the labels. Corroding containers should be properly disposed of. • Never store hazardous products in food containers. • Never mix household hazardous chemicals or water with other products. Incompatibles, such as chlorine bleach and ammonia, may react, ignite, or explode. • Keep household hazardous materials out of reach of children. • Follow manufacturer's instructions for the proper use and disposal of the household chemical. • Never use hair spray, cleaning solutions, paint products, or pesticides near an open flame. • Never dispose of hazardous products by pouring them down a sink, toilet or bathtub drain (unless made for that purpose). ■Never pour hazardous materials into streams or storm drains.
