Show Marriott-Slaterville City History November 2010 A pending issue of importance to our community is the North Davis Corridor currently being studied, preparatory to an environmental study. Cari Hulet, from UDOT, gave a presentation and update to the City Council at the November 18, 2010 meeting. The current plans call for stopping at 12*i Street. When Councilman Delbert Hodson asked the reason they were not going further, she responded that the highway standard for this project is a 30 year study. This study shows insufficient growth to justify extension of the proposed road beyond 12th Street. Mr. Hodson is deeply concerned about the influx of all the traffic on this street, which will greatly impact that road and our community. Ms. Hulet advised that the impacts on 12th Street have not been addressed as yet. Mr. Hodson feels the new road should go all the way to the Hot Springs area and tie to 1-15. Further concern about the current plan was voiced by Councilmen Kim Slater and Scott VanLeeuwen including that people within the transportation corridor are limited in developing property there. President Dennis Ilium was concerned that recommendations were already in place, and now seem to be disregarded. Ms. Hulet reiterated that they only make plans to the year 2040, and that prior plans can still be used for long-range planning. The environmental study is necessary. In answer to Councilman Rob Smout's question about how the final decision will be made, she said the Federal Highways has the final decision, and will base it on data and recommendations from UDOT. They usually always follow the UDOT recommendation. Mayor Keith Butler said that WACOG has tried to get the road as on the original plan, but has not been successful either. So the waiting game continues. Business licenses were approved for Reel Corporation, 1298 South 1200 West, a steel shop, and Kar-E's Baskets, 424 South 2025 West, gift baskets, a home business. Ordinance 2010-07, amending Road Designation and Building Addresses and naming 1500 West Street to include "Venture Way," was discussed. The city has received a request from Venture Academy student ambassadors that the name of 1500 West includes Venture Way. City Administrator Bill Morris said that the designation of 1500 West should remain on the sign and the name can be in smaller letters. The ordinance is necessary for the designation, and it requires that the students requesting the name would need to pay for the new sign. He reviewed the technical changes to the road designation and building address ordinance that help update this chapter and make it more readable. Katie Smout and Emilie Clark, students from the school, said they wanted to name the street Venture Way to promote school spirit. Mr. VanLeeuwen asked if they are willing to do a fund raiser to pay for the sign, which they agreed to do. Ordinance 2010-07 was adopted unanimously. The meeting schedule for the City Council Meetings for the year 2011 was approved by the council. A portion of the new 400 North Street failed to pass an asphalt test. That portion of the road will have to be milled and replaced by the contractor at their expense, approximately $150,000. The road has been sealed and may be slippery this winter. Trees and landscaping are being put in place now and next spring. A Breakfast with Santa will be held on December 11, 2010, under the direction of Shauna Meyerhoffer. The General Election was held in the city complex on November 2, 2010, with early voting carried out also. At the council meeting, Mayor Keith Butler congratulated Terry Thompson, who was in attendance, on his election as the new Weber County Sheriff. 153 |
