Show Marriott-Slaterville City History July 2010 Those omnipresent orange barrels have a new home on 400 North, as utilities are moved in preparation of construction for that road from 1900 West to 1200 West. We can expect narrow lanes, oneway roads, and other delays during the construction. July 1, 2010, begins anew fiscal and budget year. The City Council recently approved the 2010-2011 budget without the any municipal property tax being imposed. The City staff and Mayor Keith Butler have worked hard to keep the budget balanced. The city has increased the building rental rate to $75 for residents to help cover building maintenance costs. Non-resident rates are usually double. The Central Weber Sewer Improvement District increased rates for sewer treatment. Garbage rates remain unchanged. Construction at Marriott Park is complete for this year with new playground and a pressurized irrigation system. Both the Marriott Park and the Slaterville Park have bowery and kitchen facilities, The City Hall Park (the Clifford and Elizabeth Blair Park) has bowery facilities and municipal gardens. The cost to rent a park is $25 for a half day block. We were recognized as a Tree City USA for our fifth year, and also received the Growth Award for our municipal gardens and river corridor preservation efforts. All the park volunteers are thanked and congratulated for there important part in achieving these awards. The Pioneer Post reminded us of the West Davis Corridor EIS Study being held at Alternative Workshops at the Sunset City Hall on August 3, 2010, the Kanesville Elementary School, West Haven, August 4, and Legacy Events Center in Farmington on August 5. Again we have been reminded by the Weber County Sheriff's Office to be aware that burglary and thefts are increasing across the county. Thieves target houses where the garage door is left open, especially at night. Keep cars locked, put a lock on your trailers, secure your home and business. Prevention helps avoidance of being a victim. A wonderful Independence Day celebration was held, beginning on July 3, with breakfasts at the Marriott Park and the L. D. S. Bowery, and concluding with a golf tournament on July 5, 2010. The tied winning golf teams were Chad Brown's and Greg Lewis'. A 5K run was held on July 3, under the guidance of Robert Hirschi. The winner was Josh Dimick. A parade began at the assembly area on 700 South, continuing to the Marriott Park. Darrell Mecham was the Grand Marshall, with June Meyerhoffer and LaRee Shurtleff as the parade queens. They were driven by Mayor Keith Butler in an antique car. The Mayors Trophy went to the Fuller family for their entrant of Family Fun Traditions, the Most Patriotic entry was American Leaders, by the Will Holley family. The Most Creative was the American Princess, of the Shay Holley family, featuring Sarah Holley. With many floats, vehicles, bicycles, tricycles, wagons, and golf carts and off-road vehicles, all decorated with red, white and blue, it was fun to watch (and participate in). A special entrant was Ron Gardiner and his horse, Sundance, Ogden's dancing horse. Scott VanLeeuwen loaned Gardiner some professional horse training tapes in 1997, which started Gardiner on a lifelong quest to learn as much as he could about communicating with horses. Gardiner suffered life threatening injuries, unrelated to horses, as a police officer in 2006 and again in 2007, but he continues to fight through his injuries to perform with Sundance and bring a smile to the face of everyone who enjoys watching them. It was so fitting for them to honor us by participating in our parade. Each year gets better! 142 |
