Show Marriott-Slaterville City History April 2010 Spring has officially arrived, even if early April weather made one wonder. A few snow storms helped the summer water situation, but slowed early spring yard work. To help residents during spring cleaning, the city provided a dumpster at both the Marriott Park and at the Slaterville Park, from April 16-18. This is a free service for residents, who were asked to ensure that all garbage was placed completely inside the dumpsters and none left on the ground. This service is sponsored by Marriott-Slaterville City and Waste Management. Even with cloudy skies, a brisk wind, and the threat of rain, a successful (but quick) Easter Egg Hunt was held in the Slaterville Park on April 3, 2010, beginning at 10:00 a.m. An estimated 125 children, age 1 through 8, attended. Darren and Angela Erwin supervised the Youth Council in carrying out the activities. It was sponsored by the city, and the Les Olson Company. Operation Happy Kids helped the Erwins fill eggs with candy. Prizes, including balls, whistles, rubber ducks, and many other items, were hidden and discovered, as well as the eggs. The Easter Bunny made a special appearance, to the delight of the children. A change in the Justice Court has been necessary. For most of the city's history, Marriott-Slaterville has been part of the Weber Justice Court. Budget deficits and personnel problems have resulted in the county asking Roy City to take over this court. However, Roy City does not use the county sheriff for law enforcement, while our city does. Therefore, we will not use the Roy City Justice Court, except for cases prior to April 1, 2010. The city originally hoped to join with the Farr West Justice Court. The state court agency informed Marriott-Slaterville that they would likely require costly court upgrades for a merger with Farr West, so that course was abandoned. Marriott-Slaterville opted to join Washington Terrace, who also uses the county sheriff. The upgrades to a new court class are avoided by merging with Washington Terrace, which unfortunately is not as close as Farr West. Most Justice Court cases involve non-residents. As a convenience, residents receiving a non-mandatory appearance citation can contact the City Attorney at 801-627-1919, ext. 205, to see if a plea arrangement can be reached on a case-by-case basis, without having to appear in Court. Otherwise, all new cases after April 1,2010, will be handled at the new "Washington Terrace/Marriott-Slaterville Justice Court" located in Washington Terrace. At the City Council Meeting held on Thursday, April 15, 2010, Judge Pat Lambert, the Court Clerks and Chris Allred, the prosecutor for Washington Terrace/Marriott-Slaterville Justice Court were introduced to the Council by City Administrator Bill Morris. Judge Lambert thanked the council for the opportunity to handle the cases for our city. One court session has been held which went well. Judge Lambert foresees more courts being consolidated in this manner in the future. Prosecuting Attorney Allred said he has worked with this judge and staff for about five years, and is confident the consolidation will work well. The Council, in turn, thanked Judge Lambert and staff for their support in this transition. A business license for the Utah Renaissance Festival, 3195 W. Pioneer Road, a cultural event, was approved at the April Council Meeting. Property owner Philip Spencer at 320 North 1600 West, has proposed the adjustment of the boundaries of two parcels of land. Existing homes are located on the two separate parcels. The Planning Commission has recommended this proposal. A review of the amended plat was completed by city engineers. House Parcel 1 needs a 20,000 square foot minimum size for current zoning, with a frontage of a minimum 100 feet. The plat has been adjusted to meet the requirements specified. The Council voted in favor of the proposal. 134 |
