Show Senior Activity The Senior Center continues to make available a lunch on Tuesdays, beginning at 11:30 a.m. A dinner is also available on the third Wednesday of each month, at 5:30 p.m. In addition to the meals, and the visiting which attends them, Intermountain Healthcare provides blood pressure tests, as well as cholesterol and other tests, on alternating months. They also provide excellent information in their newsletters. The March Senior Health Connection Newsletter featured a guide for Seniors with suggestions for good communication in talking with their doctor. The April 2010 newsletter gave valuable information on ways to stay sharp as we age, Get Brain Healthy. Suggestions included snacking on almonds and blueberries instead of candy, ballroom dancing, walking your dog, work Sudoku and other puzzles, volunteer, take classes, join a book club, and other activities. The Intermountain Healthcare information given at the Senior Center in May concerned strokes. As every second counts in helpful treatment, it included knowing the signs of a stroke and instructed everyone to act in time. Signs of stroke symptoms can be remembered by the acronym F. A. S. T.: F- Face, A - Arm, S - Speech, and T - Time. The Newsletter given at the Senior Center in July concerned the importance of Advanced Directives, legal documents that let you plan your future medical care, if you can't speak for yourself. They include a Living Will, a Special Power of Attorney, and a Medical Treatment Plan. The Senior Health Connection Newsletter for August 2010, explained the facts about cholesterol numbers, and gave suggestions for keeping it under control. The Weber County Organization for the Elderly sponsors Prime Time Travelers. Information on three activities was available in August. They were, Crazy for You, at the Pickleville Playhouse, August 27, 2010, the Fall Foliage tour on September 14, 2010, and an Afternoon Tea at the Grand American Hotel on October 12, 2010. All of them sounded like great fun. The ABC's of Breast Cancer: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was the focus of the Senior Health Connection Newsletter for October 2010. Women were encouraged to get a mammogram-13 million U.S. women over 40 years do not. Throughout the fall and winter months, Carolyn Deru conducts a yoga class every Thursday beginning at 9:00 a.m. Her class and work have been greatly appreciated by many in the community. Flu shots were available at the Senior Center on October 19, 2010, from noon to 2:00 p.m., under the Community Nursing Services Immunization Program. The immunization covered three flu strains. Regular shots were $25.00, and $30.00 for FluMist or Thimersol-fee shots. The shots for those with Medicare are free. A line-dance class, not sponsored by the city, is held each Thursday beginning at 10:30 a.m. A good sized group attends, under the direction of Sue Aston. From the laughter and clamor ensuing from the room, they have a great time. 17 |
