Show Marriott-Slaterville City History February 2010 Do you count-does one person matter? Residents were alerted to the coming questionnaire for the 2010 Census, arriving in March. From the February Pioneer Post, "The foundation of American democracy depends on fair and equitable representation, and the Census is an important part of our democracy." The form should be completed and returned to the U. S. Census Bureau promptly. The importance of the census was also discussed at the February 18, 2010, City Council Meeting. Did UDOT lie to us? Or were we just mis-informed? In December 2009 UDOT announced that the reconstruction of 12*< Street was completed, except for landscaping. By this February the orange cones had reappeared, and medians were being added, one lane traffic was in place, and other construction was taking place. Twelfth Street and Wall Avenue is a mass of cones, and a real traffic mess. Will it really end sometime? Also in the February Pioneer Post, City Council President Dennis Ilium reported a number of projects in 2010. Reconstruction of 400 North should start soon. Major repairs will be made this year on 1200 West, after Questar finishes its gas line replacement. There will be ongoing park projects also. Comments are welcome; for executive issues call the city at 801-627-1919, or for legislative issues contact your council member. One of the first items of business at the February 18, 2010, meeting was a public hearing on the application by Marion Long for the creation of an Agriculture Protection Area at 3175 W. Pioneer Road. City Administrator Bill Morris explained that the city had received an application for the area, and staff had reviewed it and the proposed creation document. The Planning Commission and the conservation district both recommend approving this agriculture protection area. He has spoken with Kelly Aiken, a resident, who said he is in favor of the application. Public comment was requested by President Dennis Ilium. Marion Long stated he supported his application, and has nothing else to say if it is going to be approved. No other public comment was offered. Following the closing of the public hearing and the re-opening of the public meeting, the matter was discussed by the council. Councilman Kim Slater asked if the five acre requirement was met, which was affirmed by staff. Councilman Scott VanLeeuwen asked Mr. Long how many horses he had on the property. Mr. Long said he presently has eight, but he hopes to cut it down to five horses. The creation of the proposed agriculture protection area was approved unanimously by the Council. Memorandums from the City Engineer, Jones and Associates, dated May 20, 2009, and January 7, 2010, recommended the conditional acceptance of the Quail Meadows Subdivision, subject to the developer completing a list of outstanding items before final acceptance. At the May 2009 request, the developer had not moved the power pole out of 1200 West, so the council did not want to act on the acceptance until that item was complete. The developer also needs to provide a set of as built drawings to the City Engineer, place monuments, complete some backfill, and other items. Staff would like to start conditional acceptance in order to help get the project complete. After discussion conditional acceptance subject to the City Engineer's memorandums of May 20, 2009, and January 7, 2010, was granted by the council by unanimous vote. Mr. Morris reported on the need to find a new justice court for our city, as the county will soon be closing its court. The county will go to Roy City. Mr. Morris has had several conversations with Judge 129 |
