Show End of an Era (cont'd) holding 210 inmates. The county jail had been a nightmare before then. It had been sued by civil rights groups and was operating under federal court order due to overcrowding and other problems when the bond election for the new jail finally passed in 1998. Inmates had been kept in the top four floors of the Municipal Building downtown since the 1930s until the Kiesel Facility opened in 1986 and was immediately at capacity. There are no longer any cells in the Municipal Building and the Kiesel Facility serves as a medium-security site. But Slater doesn't like to talk monuments. "My Dad always said 'Your personnel are your legacy.' I've kept that on a card in my desk ... There have been lots of events but when you really analyze it, it's the NICHOLAS DRANEY/Standaru-hxammor Outgoing Weber County Sheriff Brad Slater gives a tour ot the 12th Street jail in Ogden on Wednesday. people that make the events remarkable. "I'm just a dumb, fat, old cop who had a chance to work with a lot of great people." Slater will keep his residence in Weber County, staying with relatives in Cache County at times in lieu of the daily two hours of commuting. "I'm still going to be a Slater from Slaterville," he said, related to Richard Slater of one of the unincorporated town's three founding families five generations back, and living a few doors down from the house where he grew up. ; 219 |
