Show Family Fun Traditions, the Most Patriotic entry was American Leaders, by the Will Holley family (he made a credible Mayor Butler). The Most Creative was the American Princess, by the Shay Holley family, featuring Sarah Holley. With many floats, vehicles, bicycles, tricycles, wagons, golf carts and off-road vehicles, all decorated with red, white and blue, it was fun to watch (and participate in). A special entrant was Ron Gardiner and his horse, Sundance, Ogden's dancing horse. Scott VanLeeuwen loaned Gardiner some professional horse training tapes in 1997, which started Gardiner on a lifelong quest to learn as much as he could about communicating with horses. Gardiner suffered life threatening injuries, unrelated to horses, as a police officer in 2006 and again in 2007, but he continues to fight through his injuries to perform with Sundance and bring a smile to the face of everyone who enjoys watching them. It was so fitting for them to honor us by participating in our parade. Each year gets better! There were hamburgers, hot dogs, side dishes, and pop for hungry celebrants, dispensed by the City Council and helpers from the Sheriff's Department. A candy cannon, giant slide and the new playground equipment entertained the younger people. A new ride was a brilliant red "hammer," a smaller version of the scary ride at Lagoon. The ingenious (or infernal) ride was built by Reid Haroldsen and brought by him to the park to add excitement to those brave enough to ride. Will Holley served as master of ceremony during the afternoon activities. A cake walk interested young and not so young. Instead of a pie eating contest this year, Shauna Meyerhoffer provided other ways for participants to show their "gobbling down" prowess. For one contest, she provided bags of food which contestants could munch, chomp and swallow to see who downed the contents the quickest. The eating power of some of our residents is amazing! Great prizes were won by those who bought raffle tickets. The Trunk-or-Treat activity was held at the Slaterville Park on Saturday, October 30, 2010. Set-up started at 5:30 p.m. with treats starting at 6:00 p.m. Hot dogs, donuts and hot chocolate were dispensed. People were asked to bring a carved pumpkin, wear a costume, and their decorated car, with prizes given. Beautiful Fall weather continued in October, with extra warm temperatures, although a storm came in near Halloween, causing some concern about the city sponsored activity. However, the Trunk-or-Treat activity was a huge success (with no rain). Visitor cars lined the streets in every direction, in addition to the ones participating in the treats. Prizes for carved pumpkins, costumes and car decoration were given as follows: First place trunk decoration Jennifer Duersch Second place, trunk Ken and Marjorie Pronschinski First place pumpkin Jacob Taylor Family Second place pumpkin Sagapola Family First place adult costume Aikens Family Second place adult costume Shane Surrage First place child costume Bailey DeVries Second place child costume Julia Harvey DeAnn Hufstetler was again in charge of the city sponsored event. Thanks to her, Rod Hufstetler, Joe Cottam and Bella's Mexican Restaurant, and Sun State Equipment, for an outstanding event (and all the other witches, goblins, etc.). Breakfast with Santa was held on Saturday, December 11, 2010, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., featuring breakfast, fun activities, and a visit from Santa Claus. It was under the direction of Shauna and Stacee Meyerhoffer, with the help of elves Rod and DeAnn Hufstetler, Tim and JoAnn Louth, Al and Ramona Farr, and Glen Meyerhoffer. Cereal, pancakes, ham, scrambled eggs, doughnuts, apple and orange juice, and regular or chocolate milk, were served at the great breakfast. About 90 adults and children attended, not all of them wanting a close and personal encounter with Jolly Old St. Nick. Following the December 16, 2010, council meeting, the annual City Christmas Party was held for council members, planning commission members, volunteers and staff, at the Senior Center.
