THE COMPANY WAS ACQUIRED BY GENERAL ELECTRIC FOR $2.3 BILLION AT THE END OF 1976, THEN THE LARGEST CORPORATE MERGER IN HISTORY. THAT YEAR UTAH EARNED $185 MILLION. IN MY LAST YEAR AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER IN 1977 IT EARNED $196 MILLION. IN 1979, WITH THE BENEFIT OF NEW MANAGEMENT, EARNINGS SHOULD BE COMFORTABLY OVER $200 MILLION. VERY LITTLE OF THIS GROWTH WAS THE RESULT OF ACQUISITIONS. THE GREAT BULK OF IT WAS INTERNALLY GENERATED AND OCCURRED AFTER WE HAD SOLD THE PRINCIPAL BUSINESS THAT OCCUPIED THE COMPANY FOR NEARLY SEVENTY YEARS. THE FIRST ESSENTIAL FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF CORPORATE GROWTH IS TO HAVE CLEARLY IN MIND WHAT YOU SHOULD BE TRYING TO DO. SADLY THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE.
