FRIENDS Alf Brandin talked about Beverlee and properly so. I'm here to talk about Bud but you cannot talk about Bud without also talking about Beverlee, Together she and I worked hand-in-hand on a program over the years to improve Bud. It was not always easy or even successful but we did the best we could. Bev had found him first and already had the project well underway when I came on the scene. Bud grew up on a farm and had worked enough San Joaquin summers to consider seriously a change in careers. He was smart enough to gain admittance to the University of California. His fate was sealed when he enrolled in a course on Mining and the professor in his opening lecture defined a mine as "a hole in the ground owned by a bunch of damn fools." Bud figured at least he'd be smarter than the people he worked for and his record in this regard speaks for itself.
