Show FURMANFILMS the cantilever got close to joining, the two were 10 inches off,due to cool breezes shrinking the bridge. So, they did what any good do-it-yourselfer would do, they hammered at it till it did fit! Only this weighed 21,000 tons !! Gigantic jacks on one pier moved one whole side of the structure so the closing pin could be driven home. :03 Walking over joint connecting two cantilever sections That cantilever span of 1,400 feet on the east bay side is still the fourth longest in the country. The eastern part of the bridge was tough, but the hardest part still remained...building the world's first double suspension span. So much for part one of our story. We'll have more later, but right now, back to Ed. 20 |
