Show 6. Bill instinctively knows when to attack and when to retreat, when to speak and when to be quiet. Bill was deer hunting at the San Felipe Ranch with "Swede" Wild, a machinist in one of the H-P plants. They spotted a beautiful buck but "Swede" pointed out that it was on the neighbor's property and not their fair game. Hewlett opined that the neighbor had a big ranch with a lot of deer and would never know the difference. He promptly shot it and made Swede help him drag it through the grass, under the fence, and into the vehicle. Shortly after the neighbor espied the evidence, stormed over to San Felipe and complained to Packard who later found Bill and Swede and promptly read the riot act in no uncertain terms to Swede. All this time not a word from Hewlett. After Packard left, Swede said to Bills "Why didn't you say something?" Bill replied: "There's no point in having him mad at both of us." If you think that when the going gets tough the tough get going don't think that Hewlett's already gone. Remember he served through thick and thin on the Chrysler Board. Look at the record of the companies on whose boards Bill has served. Chrysler survived. Chase Manhattan and Watkins-Johnson are still there. FMC made it but had to move. The other five have been taken over. Four out of nine may not be a bad batting average for a San Francisco Giant but we expect more from a giant of industry. Besides the poor survival rate, being on a board with Hewlett had another inherent disadvantage. The directors got sued a lot because at least one of them had the ability to pay. He may sink the ship but he won't desert a sinking ship. |
