Show IMPRESSIVE AS THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE, THEY PRIMARILY SERVE TO DOCUMENT THE WELL- ACCEPTED FACT THAT IN HIS TIME WALTER WRISTON WAS A BANKER WITHOUT PEER. BUT WALT'S MOST LASTING IMPACT IS LIKELY TO BE HIS EARLY RECOGNITION OF THE POTENTIAL OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO ADVANCE U. S. BANKING ABROAD. HE MOVED SWIFTLY AND DEFTLY INTO THE APPLICATIONS OF SPACE AGE TECHNOLOGY TO KNIT A WORLDWIDE NETWORK OF CITIBANK OFFICES THAT INCREASED THE FLOW AND TRANSFER OF FUNDS WORLDWIDE AND COULD COMMUNICATE INFORMATION IN A FEW SECONDS THAT EARLIER TOOK 24 HOURS. HE REALIZED THAT SATELLITES HAVE MADE COMMUNICATION COSTS ALMOST INSENSITIVE TO DISTANCE. OTHERS FOLLOWED SUIT, AND NOW INFORMATION FLOWS BACK AND FORTH FROM FINANCIAL CAPITALS TO THE MOST REMOTE NATIONS IN A MATTER OF MINUTES AND REACTION TIME TO CHANGED CONDITIONS CAN BE ALMOST INSTANTANEOUS. THE CONSEQUENCES HAVE REVOLUTIONIZED THE WAY THE WORLD DOES BUSINESS. CAPITAL MARKETS HAVE BECOME WORLDWIDE AND CAPITAL MOVEMENTS DWARF WORLD TRADE IN SIZE AND HAVE REPLACED IT AS THE DRIVING FORCE OF THE WORLD ECONOMY. 5. |
