Show the critical key. Once the slate is chosen, the Bohemian election bears a striking similarity to those in Mexico. Only once did a slate nominated by the Committee excite an opposition candidacy. It was not my finest hour! The number who vote is really not as bad as it sounds because like our Nation's founding fathers we don't entrust the right to vote to just anyone. Our constitution disenfranchises half the members - none of this "one member one vote" business. But in defense of the Bohemian version of democracy and its ability to discriminate, none of us would feel we were unelectable to the highest office simply because we had a tiger tattoed on our tail. A tattoo on the tail is not the only characteristic that distinguishes our honored guest. George has the unique distinction of having achieved success in academia, in businiess, and in public service. In academia he started at the bottom and worked his way up, with two sabbaticals for service in Washington. In business he started very near the top, very quickly became second in command, but again had his upward progress interrupted by a third call to serve his country. The record shows that he has served on the Council of Economic Advisers, as Secretary of Labor, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Secretary of Treasury, and most recently as Secretary of State - service under three Presidents - four positions of Cabinet rank, three under a single administration - an unparalled distinction. But it is not just the jobs he's held that sets George as a man apart. It is how he has done the jobs that is the full measure of the man. George simply does whatever he undertakes superbly well. The reasons are not hard to find. When I talk about George Shultz, there is no way I can plead objectivity. I am immensely prejudiced in his favor for he possesses everything I seek in a good friend and an esteemed associate. He is a warm wonderful guy - humble with nothing to be humble about. So let me turn to three other people of widely diverse backgrounds and see what they have said publicly about George. First, let me cite remarks made at a testimonial dinner by George's guest at last year's Midsummer Encampment - General Colin Powell. I quote excerpts: 2. |
