Show WHEN HE PLAYED, HE PLAYED HARD. HE HAD GREAT HAND-EYE COORDINATION. HE COULD PLAY THE VIOLIN. THROW THE JAVELIN, PITCH AND PASS, AND PRESENT A DRY FLY NO TROUT COULD RESIST. HE WAS MARVELOUSLY COORDINATED, TOUGH, FLEET OF FOOT, FEARLESS - POUND FOR POUND A TREMENDOUS ATHLETE. AND HE WAS PATIENTLY WAITING TO REACH THE AGE WHEN HE FELT IT WOULD BE PROPER TO TAKE UP GOLF. ERNIE'S ACHIEVEMENTS DID NOT GO UNRECOGNIZED IN HIS LIFETIME. FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO BUSINESS EDUCATION MICHIGAN AND HARVARD AS WELL AS STANFORD PRESENTED HIM WITH AWARDS. THE STANFORD BOARD OF ATHLETICS GAVE HIM ITS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD, NOT FOR HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS PER SE ON THE PLAYING FIELD. BUT FOR HIS ACHIEVEMENTS THEREAFTER. HONORARY DOCTORATES WERE CONFERRED UPON HIM. HE WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE STAR FOR CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY IN ACTION AND THE PURPLE HEART. I VISITED ERNIE IN A NEW YORK NAVAL HOSPITAL WHILE HE WAS RECOVERING FROM THE ARMOR-PIERCING BULLET WOUND IN HIS LEG. THERE ARE NOT MANY THINGS THAT THE GOVERNMENT DOES WELL BUT ONE THING THEY DO SUPERBLY WELL IS WAX LINOLEUM FLOORS. WHEN ERNIE RECEIVED WORD I WAS THERE, HE CAME BURSTING THROUGH SWINGING DOORS AND SET THE SPEED RECORD THAT STILL STANDS TODAY FOR A MAN ON CRUTCHES RACING DOWN A WELL-WAXED RAMP. 9. |
