Show WHEN HE COULD WALK AGAIN, HE FINISHED OUT HIS NAVAL CAREER WITH GENERAL CLAY AS A STAFF MEMBER OF THE U. S. CONTROL GROUP WHICH WAS NEGOTIATING WITH THE RUSSIANS, BRITISH, AND FRENCH REGARDING THE POST-WAR ORGANIZATION OF DEFEATED GERMANY. IN PEACE ERNIE HAS CONTINUED TO SERVE HIS COUNTRY ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY SINCE 1961 ON ONE OR ANOTHER GOVERNMENTAL COUNCIL OR COMMISSION, INCLUDING SUCH WIDE-RANGING ASSIGNMENTS AS BUSINESS ETHICS, PRIVATE ENTERPRISE IN FOREIGN AID, WHITE HOUSE FELLOWS, DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND INVESTMENT, THE EXPORT-IMPORT BANK, AND AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH HE WAS SERVING WITH DAVE PACKARD ON THE PRESIDENTIALLY APPOINTED BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION ON DEFENSE MANAGEMENT.
