Show 2. Arjay was one of the famed Whiz Kids. Others I knew were Tex Thorton, Chairman of Litton, and Bob McNamara, Arjay's predecessor as President of Ford Motors and then Chairman of the World Bank. Tex was accumulating companies at about the same rate that Bob was dispensing largesse to needy members of the Third World. Both were suave and impressive. But Arjay was more of a plain old shoe. He liked to characterize himself as "a Nebraska farm boy" or a "bean counter." He had not yet taken to wearing striped shirts with plain collars. Yet he quickly demonstrated he was at home with big numbers. Anyway I was predisposed to like him, for he had been raised in an atmosphere that was friendly toward executive compensation. I was still struggling at Utah where many of our directors were wedded to the First Security/Amalgamated Sugar syndrome that set executive compensation about 10% above starvation levels. Henry Ford's salary was disclosed in the proxy statement and it revealed clearly that the need for the money was not a consideration in setting the Chairman's salary. I couldn't help but like that. |
