Show PURVEYORS OF CONVENTIONAL WISDOM ARE UNCOMFORTABLE IN THE PRESENCE OF THOSE WHO THINK FOR THEMSELVES. WALT WAS NOT ALWAYS WARMLY WELCOMED AT THE WAY STATIONS UP THE CORPORATE LADDER. WHEN HE WAS ASSIGNED TO THE OVERSEAS DIVISION THE GROUP HEAD SAID, AND I QUOTE: "I'M SORRY YOU CAME TO THE OVERSEAS DIVISION. I DIDN'T WANT YOU AND ACTIVELY ASKED THAT YOU NOT COME. YOU ARE A VICE PRESIDENT. YOU ARE TOO OLD TO LEARN ANYTHING. YOU'VE GOT TO BE BORN IN THIS BUSINESS AND I'M AWFULLY SORRY THAT YOU ARE HERE." CLOSE QUOTE. BUT WALT PROVED THE MAN WRONG ON ALL COUNTS. HE BECAME HEAD OF THE DIVISION, OPENED 85 NEW FOREIGN BRANCHES, AND VASTLY EXPANDED ITS INTERNATIONAL BANKING ACTIVITIES. AMONG HIS INNOVATIONS, HE CREATED THE MODERN SHIP LOAN FOR ARISTOTLE ONASSIS AND INVENTED THE NEGOTIABLE CERTIFICATE OF DEPOSIT, AND THE ONE-BANK HOLDING COMPANY. 3. |
