Show WHEN ERNIE WAS PERSUADED TO BECOME DEAN, HE WAS FACED WITH A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS OF DOLLAR COMPENSATION. HE MADE UP FOR PART OF THE LOSS OF COMPENSATION BY ACCEPTING THE MANY BOARD INVITATIONS THAT CAME HIS WAY - HEWLETT PACKARD, AETNA INSURANCE, SAFEWAY, OWENS ILLINOIS, JUST TO NAME A FEW. THERE WAS NO ROOM FOR ANOTHER BOARD BUT I HAD A PROBLEM. I HAD WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY PERSUADED MY BOARD PEOPLED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FOUNDING FAMILIES THAT THE TIME HAD COME IN OUR CONVERSION FROM A PRIVATE COMPANY TO A PUBLIC COMPANY THAT WE NEEDED AN OUTSIDE DIRECTOR. I PROMISED THEM THE BEST SO I CALLED UP ERNIE AND SAID: "ERNIE, I WANT YOU TO JOIN THE UTAH BOARD AND I AM ONLY GOING TO GIVE YOU ONE REASON WHY YOU SHOULD. I NEED YOU." HE REPLIED WITH FEELING: "YOU (EXPLETIVE DELETED), YOU KNOW THAT'S THE ONLY REASON I CAN'T TURN DOWN." I REPLIED SMUGLY: "THAT'S WHY I USED IT." 7. |
